The safety that wasn't

Referee Jim Lenau met with a pool reporter to explain the safety call against Montana's Peter Nguyen with 44 seconds left in the first half.

It was the wrong call.

"The ruling on the field was that the (returner) caught the ball in the end zone and carried it out of the back of the end zone," Lenau said. "That ruling, we have since learned, was incorrect. We made a mistake. We apologize to the University of Montana."

Lenau said it was his call, and that he didn't consult with any of the other six game officials. :ohno: :ohno: :ohno:

So there was a safety that wasn't called that should have been, and a safety that was called that shouldn't.

The safety that was called ended up harmless, since NAU went for two twice on TD's after, ended up with the same point total ( and after the safety, just ran the clock out of the first half).

Montana still won that exchange of blown calls.

No, there wasn't. The ball was illegally kicked out of the endzone causing the ball to become dead. This is right out of the NCAA rule book...

"an illegal kick is a live-ball foul that causes the ball to become
dead."

First of all, we won the game....sooooooooooooooo...Secondly, by his own admission, he blew a fairly simple call.

All good.

How many other games would actually have THREE different plays where the Safety/No Safety call would come into play?

We need replay in FCS. Most of the major conference games have some sort of live feed at the very least. If there's an available live feed they should have someone in the booth reviewing shit. Blatant missed calls piss me off.

You're right that the bad calls equaled out.

However, as far as referee evaluation is concerned, making up a rule that doesn't exist (i.e., not knowing what the hell you're doing) is a pretty egregious gaffe. From what I've heard, this type of thing gets refs fined or canned.

So the kick return out of the back of the endzone shouldn't be a safety?

Correct.

Interestingly enough, former Montana star Marc Mariani was carried out of the back of the endzone with a kickoff reception at least once yesterday in the Tennessee Titans game (high wind carrying the ball), yet no safety was called.

Go figure. ;)

Yes, and the fearless commissioner Fullerton was at the game. I am sure he will have harsh word for the Big Sky officials during their calls this week.. ..making up their own rules. Now that is the mark of good officials..hey we have an answer for anything!

I'm not sure there is anything we can do except piss and moan  Seriously though, I don't remember there ever being a football game score changed or replayed due to bad officiating, so I really don't think there is much that can or should happen other than an apology when warranted.

My only point is this: The safety changed many plays through the course of the game. It make NAU go for two twice when it normally wouldn't have. It forced us to go for a TD instead of a field goal at the end of the game. It completely changed the momentum and perspective going into halftime....

Refs have GOT to know that rule....

refs crew up all the time and the grizzlies have been on the favorable end of more than a few blown calls throughtout the years.

AND Dan Moore is out for the season. That right there is about a big enough reason to smack those officials all over the place with a board with a spike installed.
