The check's in the mail.
As to the evolutionary benefits, I did some poking around and found some animal examples:
"For example, some same-sex sexual behaviors appear to play a role in aggressive or dominance interactions, especially in males. In numerous genera and species of cockroaches, for example, males frequently elicit mountings by other males using stereotyped courtship maneuvers, or they might mimic female behaviors and mount courting males [42]. Such ‘pseudofemale’ behavior apparently increases the reproductive fitness of the males exhibiting it, because it increases the likelihood that they will mate with the female that had been courted by the displaced male. If a heritable genetic component underlies the tendency to engage in such interactions, the net effect can be to exaggerate or diminish the response to selection of traits that are involved in the interaction [38]."
I suppose that would be a bisexual example. I don't really know what I'm talking about, but I would say that more research needs to be done to really understand the evolutionary origins of homosexuality. That being said, the evolutionary pressures which lead to an adaptation do not necessarily apply to current humans (like the appendix).

First let me say I really don't know what I am talking about eitherChemhen wrote:AZGrizFan wrote:

Second, I hate cockroaches.
But I think it makes my point. The evolutionary benefits of bi-sexuality are pretty obvious. That doesn't mean that homosexuality is a choice. Once one takes into consideration the genetics of bi-sexuality, the nuturing aspects in one's environment could easily seal the deal. In the same respect just because a behavior isn't normal based on statistics doesn't mean it is deviant or harmful, or should be considered abhorent or aberrant. It is just one of the many colors of the rainbow.
I simply struggle with the argument that someone is born gay until I see more rational or scientific proof. I should probably say a large percentage (even 2 % which is a large percentage based on genetic traits I would think) is born gay. I can certainly see a much much smaller percentage. I, also, can certainly understand why someone is born more bi-sexual than another person and then developed a preference or was nutured in a way that increased that preference. But as I said before, if that is the correct interpretation (which I am not certain it is), so what? No harm no foul. Enjoy life

I think the thought process behind the title of this thread is related to thought process behind the American Psychiatric Association developing a definition of psychiactric disorder so as to exclude defining homosexuality as such.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

My guess is it is similar to what Gil & Cappy experienced in the drunk tank....both knew they wouldn't get out of the drunk tank alive to have a chance at further propagating their genes unless they "chomped down on the bit"....once again showing this was a choice....OL FU wrote:I understand.native wrote:
I actually agree with virtually your entire post, OL FU. My discussion of nature vs nurture was not directed at you personally.
I do hope the poster expounds on the evolutionary benefits of homosexuality versus bi-sexuality. Mainly because I have not heard any.
