Do you really think the bowl games make more money than a playoff would make? A playoff would likely make a lot more money than the current bowl system, especially since you can still have bowl games and a playoff. There reason there is no playoff is that the BCS powers control the bowls, they would not control a playoff, the NCAA would.

The sponsorship money would go to the NCAA and not to the BCS, so the BCS powers oppose it.
