Notre Dame Tragedy

Post by SuperHornet »

My prayers go out to the family of Notre Dame's practice filmer.

I did that job at San Joaquin Delta College and Sac State. Fortunately for me, at Delta, I filmed practices and games from the top of the press box. At Sac, I found out first-hand about the dangers of being in a fully-extended cherry picker. Teams everywhere should go through their SOPs for practice and game film, especially end-zone shots.

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

Personally, I don't know enough about the story to go throwing around blame.
Evidently he had posted something on twitter or something regarding his being worried about being up there with the high winds.

If that was the case, he probably should have addressed those concerns to his supervisor. "hey boss, don't you think it's a bit too windy to be up in the lift?"

It isn't like being in such equipment is limited to sports practice filming. There are all sorts of occupations that involve work in elevated equipment. But I'm guessing that most of them have more established guidelines against working in adverse weather conditions.

Let's start a thread titled: "GAY PEOPLE HATE HARD WORKING STRAIGHT COLLEGE KIDS!"***

This happened at a JMU football game. maybe '96/'97. mcveryl might remember the exact year. The scissor stand was just behind the endzone bleachers and I saw it tip over in a really stiff wind. Luckily the people in it weren't seriously injured from what I recall. Obviously, they began tying that thing to the bleachers after that.

Sad for the kid and his family, but do we refer to too many things as the _____ Tragedy?

His sexuality is irrelevent. He knew it would be dangerous up there, but went up anyways. Stupid.

Sad story.

Before he went up there, the kid heard about the forecasted winds and sent a text out joking that he had lived long enough. Then later, from the tower, posted a few texts that said he was scared sh!tless as the wind was increasing.

What prevents kids from taking action to protect themselves? :ohno: Hit the down button and screw the filming.

Must be a hard wired issue...that's why armies like young kids...they will follow directions, even stupid ones, at the risk of their own lives.

Interesting. Suicide is stupid also.

So when this kid makes a stupid decision he is a Darwin candidate...but when gay people commit suicide, you decide they are "victims"? 8-)

Unless he was bullied and teased to go up there, I stand by my statements.

Not all people who commit suicide were bullied or teased.

There are all sorts of kids of pressure and bullying...some from direct statements, other pressures from indirect statements.

He most likely felt pressure to go up and stay up there. Pressure to complete his job, pressure to not look like a pVssy - can't be afraid of a little wind....same stuff everyone feels. He caved in because he cared how he would look. Straight and gay folks commit suicide for all osrts of reasons...mostly because they don't fit in and they don't want to look like losers. This guy felt pressure...didn't want to "fail". Same stuff, just from another angle.

You only focus on the gay part. That is disgusting and selfish.

Jon, you are out of line here. He was a young man who, although scared, probably thought he was safe on the tower. If he was told not to go up, or told to come down and refused, I might agree with you. But considering that he was probably about 20/21 years old he probably lacked the wisdom that you or I might have.

It was his job to be up there filming. But the coach of the team should not had him up there that day. The winds were very dangerous... some even wonder why the coach even had his team outside that day. Some are calling for Kelly to be fired.

He had to know it was dangerous up there in those winds.

Even Jim Tressel knew the elements were dangerous...

"I don't know today if we'll be inside or out. It looks a little nasty. I worry about our cameramen, their well-being up there 50 feet in the air. So we'll see how that goes." -Jim Tressel

That comment was made prior to the Notre Dame incident
