Re: More Gays Voting Republican
It makes sense.......gays (despite what the Far Right thinks) are everyday people too. They've been hit by the economic downturn just as hard as everyone else. And with a waning social "war" against everything and anything gay in most states, they are starting to support the GOP who obviously have a better track record (although questionable lately) at managing government and the economy. That's why it pisses me off that the GOP has been hijacked by the Religious Right.......those numbers would easily rise to 50%-60% if the GOP stop obsessing over social issues.Col Hogan wrote:According to Politico, 31% of people who identify themselves as gay voted for GOP candidates Tuesday, up from 24% in 2006 and 23% in 2004...

I personally think it is a great idea for all those interested in using politics to advance the "moral" highground to splinter off and form their own party. It would be best for the repubes if that were to happen.

Nonetheless, there needs to be a truce and an alliance between libertarians (including gay libertarians) and social conservatives. One without the other is a permanent minority.clenz wrote:It makes sense.......gays (despite what the Far Right thinks) are everyday people too. Gays need to stop infiltrating schools and demonizing Christians, and Christians need to be much more circumspect on public policy issues and be more tolerant of non-conformist adult behavior. There is plenty of common ground! Smaller and less intrusive government serves all concerned. The most valuable social contract for the future of the Republic would be an alliance among libertarians, fiscal conservatives and social conservatives. More than half of conservatives are sympathetic to all three points of view.

That being said, as the brother of a Log Cabin Republican, I know that a large percentage of queers are professionals, hard workers, and in fact have better earning power on the whole than their straight counterparts. It only makes sense that they would like to
1) Keep more of their hard earned money
2) have a gummnit that can balance a fvcking checkbook without printing funny munny
3) Be left the fvck alone by the gummint
and
4) be Judy Garland
3)

Re: More Gays Voting Republican
I think there a few reasons for this.
1) The demographics of gays, while skewing to the left of the rest of the country, still has the same broad spectrum of ideologies as the rest of the country. This includes libertarians, fiscal conservatives, etc. Thus, you will always have a good percentage that identify on more issues with Republicans than Democrats.
2) Like any other group, personal economics tend to trump anything else. There are many gays that feel (and many have always felt) that the small-government model of economics was the best approach. However, many voted Democratic because of the outright hostitlity towards gays in the Republican Party.
3) Many voted Democratic in the past few elections in hope that a Democratic Majority would advance civil rights - repeal DADT, DOMA, etc. But, the Democrats proved to be spineless jellyfish, and did shit for gays. So a major reason to override economic philosphy has been eliminated. If progress had been made (i.e. DADT repealed, etc), many would have stayed with the Democratic Party.

The Republican Party would never lose if they ended this hostility. Who is the Religious Right going to vote for.......the Democrats???dbackjon wrote:I think there a few reasons for this.

If neither party gives a sh*t, then gays may as well vote for politicians that will be better for their pocketbook!
Let the Dems have the black/left extremist vote.......what does that add up to?......20%?

The guy who was president of the Harvard Republicans my junior year later came out of the closet. His politics were moderately conservative for the era, and he did a good job as prez. I don't think most folks gave his orientation a second thought.
