Minn. board gives Senate win to Franken
A Minnesota board on Monday certified results showing Democrat Al Franken winning the state's U.S. Senate recount over Republican Norm Coleman, but a legal challenge could keep the race in limbo.
The Canvassing Board's declaration started a seven-day clock for Coleman to file a lawsuit protesting the result, as his attorneys have said he would. If he doesn't, Franken will get the election certificate he needs to take the seat in Washington.
The former "Saturday Night Live" personality ended the recount up by 225 votes, an astonishingly thin margin in a race where more than 2.9 million votes were cast. And they completed a reversal of the unofficial Election Day results, which showed Coleman with a 215-vote lead.
Franken made up the deficit over seven tortuous weeks of ballot-sifting in part by prevailing on challenges that both campaigns brought to thousands of ballots. He also did better than Coleman when election officials opened and counted more than 900 absentee ballots that had erroneously been disqualified on Election Day.

The reorg/recount has been certified, but the election has not yet been certified. That may come next Monday.

Norm Coleman formally announces he’s contesting Senate elect
Sen. Norm Coleman said minutes ago that he will contest the result of the 2008 U.S. Senate election and take the result to court.
Coleman lost the final vote recount by 225 votes to Al Franken, who Monday declared victory after the State Canvassing Board declared he had won the most votes.
Coleman made his announcement at the State Office Building in a room across the hallway from the offices of Secretary of State Mark Ritchie, who chaired the Canvassing Board.

Re: Minn. board gives Senate win to Franken
Franken only got 42% of the vote, which is probably the total of registered Democrats. A friend of mine didn't like the idea of Franken for Senate, but voted Franken because he was a Democrat. There may be a lot of votes that were counted 3 times. Election workers forgot to mark copies of ballots that did not go through the machines in some precints. There was on precinct that Franken won that ended up with more votes than voters.AZGrizFan wrote:Much like Ventura, Minnesota gets EXACTLY what they deserve with this fcukin' wackjob.![]()

I am sure that happens in all elections. How many are for Coleman, how many are for Franken, how many are for other candidates?Gil Dobie wrote:. Re: Minn. board gives Senate win to Franken
Two of the precincts in question have 70+ extra votes for Franken. Also many out-state precincts that were pro-Coleman didn't get their absentee ballots in. The precinct with more vote than voters is pro-Franken.dbackjon wrote:I am sure that happens in all elections. Minnesota is a Donk state, most of the Conks and Indy's didn't vote for Franken who got 42%, Coleman 42%, and Barkley the Indy got most of the rest. In most western states Coleman would be a Democrat, but in Minnesota he is a Republican.AZGrizFan wrote:Does Minnesota realize they've become the laughing stock of America?HI54UNI wrote: The problem is Ventura was their idiot since he was governor. So, perhaps we should elect Charles Manson, just to "shake things up" a bit, huh? Electing Al Fcuking Franken would be akin to electing Bobcat Goldthwait. A fcukin' loon....plain and simple. Minnesota Supreme Court Chief Justice Eric Magnuson will recuse himself from participating in Norm Coleman’s legal contest of the U.S. Senate race, according to John Kostouros, Communications Director for the state’s Court Information Office. Under Minnesota law, the Chief Justice is charged with naming a three-judge panel to oversee the legal dispute. But since Magnuson served on the five-member State Canvassing Board that oversaw the recount, which gave challenger Al Franken a 225-vote lead, he will pass that duty on to justice Alan Page. Magnuson also recused himself from earlier hearings before the state’s top court
