One final thought on this subject: IF (and it's a very large if, because of the money involved) the FBS ever DID go to a playoff (whether it was 4, 8 or 16 teams), then FCS football would become even more irrelevant than it is now to the vast majority of the country. So, as long as the Griz are in the Big Sky, I hope FBS never gets a true playoff. But if the Griz move up, I hope they do. How's that for "crystal"?

That we agree on...but as long as FCS schools view moving up some kind of "cool elixir" to offset the feelings of inadequacies experienced by some of their fanbase, then there will never be an incentive for the FBS system to change.....

I simply like the idea of playing Wyoming, Colorado State, Utah State, Boise State, Utah, BYU, Washington State, Idaho, Air Force Academy, Nevada, Fresno State, San Diego State, Hawaii, etc., etc., instead of UND, UNC, SUU, UC-Davis, PSU, NAU, etc. Better games. Better athletes. Better competition. It's not a feeling of "inadequacy" but moreso a desire to see UM excel at ever higher levels. Do we (or App State) for that matter really have anything left to prove at this level?

And are we, or Montana, forbidden from scheduling those games now? We're playing Floriday next week. We played LSU two years ago, East Carolina last year, Michigan 3 yrs ago, & have another SEC game scheduled for next year (I think). Start calling out those schools on a regular basis, because even if you move up, they ain't scheduling right away anyway....and in the case of App, yes, we have something left to prove....I'd like us to win a NC with a different graduating class for once...not to sound liike a dik and I'm proud of our school, but I find YSU & Ga South runs of NC's more impressive than our 3 in a row as far as bragging rights for top FCS programs. And I know Jerry Moore ain't sticking around much longer, so we've got a few lumps looming closely on the horizon. I don't foresee us being a BSU if we make the move, but more a Marshall....and I was much more impressed with Marshall as FCS than FBS...

Totally agree. But the thing again to me is that personally I don't give a flying fuck if it's irrelevant to the unwashed masses. It's nice if it is popular enough for the schools to get some money off the thing but to me...don't care, I like what I like and if you don't like it then good for you.

Sounds good when you say it that way, but would you want to BE a Wyoming, Colorado State, Utah State, etc...?

Honestly, I like the playoffs because our level has them. I'd be fine with the bowl system if my team participated at that level. Perhaps that makes me different that a lot of FCS team fans. So be it.

Exactly. And the difference between you and me is I'd be fine with either.   So the Griz decision (although I was disappointed) was a win/win for me.

Ok, if you want to go back to the 80's and average things out from EWU's entire existance as a member of 1-AA. You failed to mention that 4 of those 7 appearances have been in the last 5 years. The statement "making the play-offs a couple times every 10 years" hardly applies to the current state of the program, and you know it. :tothehand:

Depends on what bowl your team gets to go. I thoroughly enjoyed my trip to a UVA/WVU bowl game, but sometimes they get sent to Idaho. Nothing good ever came out of Idaho. ;)

When UM moves up, they should have all their facilities upgraded by that time, mainly new locker rooms and an indoor practice facility. Idaho made the mistake of moving up but not having the infrastructure in place. Montana didn't want make that mistake.

With a lot questions regarding conference realignment among the big boys and the WAC not necessarily on solid ground with Hawaii and Louisana Tech eyeing leaving the conference this is probably a smart move for now.

MSU and UM are doing it the right way. They'll both move up in a number of years and will have the right timing and fit for a conference, with sustained and upgraded facilities. Neither will be an Idaho.

Ursus I don't think you will ever change the mind of the out of state guy from Arizona. It's a Montana thing and the non-native/transplants will never get it. Just like the former players article from yesterday, it's about the homegrown passion for the Griz that has built this program. Grady Bennett said it best "There is no way you could turn away your Montana base and still have this program. A team like Idaho St may have more overall talent, but they're never going to beat UM because those players are Montana kids, and the Grizzlies are all they care about. It's their passion, if Montana ever lost that, they'd be done. I don't care who they brought in talentwise"

Grady Bennett gets it. So does Marc Mariani and Colt Anderson and Dave Dickenson. ALL Montana kids. The poster from Arizona will never get it. I make the drive from Butte to Missoula every saturday when the Griz are home. I see the caravan, the cars from Havre, Great Falls, Billings, Sidney, Helena, Huntley Project (Waldhausers) and from everywhere else in this great state. They are driving 8 hours one way to see their son, nephew, grandson ect play for the team they dreamed about playing for when they were growing up. It's about Montana kids and their PASSION for the Griz. It's about fans of MONTANA kids going to scream their throats raw for that homegrown team and players that everybody knows, or knows somebody that knows them. That is what got this program to where it is today. Why the F*CK would anybody want that to end. Yes it would end as there would be less Montana kids on a WAC Griz team, FACT! The same spoiled people who are wanting to move up would be the first to bail after a few losing seasons. It's a Montana thing and those that aren't will never get it
You nailed it down pretty good. Most of the points you address are very simlar to ones I've relayed to others (and AZ) in the past. On top of all that there is an electricity in the air when it comes to playoff time. If the Griz are good enough to make it then that would all be gone. I can not stand the thought of that.

AZ is not living in MT now but he is originally from Missoula. He does not hold on to the things that you and I do as important in the program though. He's a great guy and a real friend so he gets a pass. :D

Great post, you should do more of them over here. Oh and you can say ****, ****, kitty...or make yourself a mix of all the above.

Go to the user cp and turn the word censoring off and you can read em' too.

Playoff games are my favorite games. The weather is usually cold, there is electricity in the air and there is something to be said for the win or go home feeling that we all have. You can not duplicate the feeling I had (we all had) all day and all through the game against App St. I'm still dazzled by it 11 months later. (My legs just came back up to temp last week, however) LOL!

I would agree with that assessment. Which is why I totally agreed with O'Day's comments in the press release regarding facilities.

And you're in finances!? So much fail. I love that you capitalized "exactly," when in reality you weren't even close to exactly. EXACTLY, would be that EWU has made the playoffs 27% of the time (in I-AA), which is better than 1/4th or 2 times every EIGHT years.
