You have all the requisite good qualities, pup, but I don't think we disagree on much, hence I do not consider you to be an "opponent." Your only blind spot, as far as I can tell, is your hatred of Beck, which is at least understandable.

Re: We're on our way...
I see more similarities between America and Rome of about 250 AD than I see similarities between Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy.
The formula for going to war has always been the same regardless of motive or reason. Even getting England into the war with Germany in WWI required some propaganda and manipulation. So did the US in WWI and WWII. I think the world is most likely better that we got into those wars.
How many countries do we plan on swallowing and keeping, by the way?
We cannot even properly occupy and pacify a little crapola sh!thole with no significant military like Iraq, and now we're suddenly going to find our own Sudetenland? Cleets, I see your point but I think you need to store the paint thinner in the garage and not your living room on this one.

1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism - FAIL (Obama world apology tour, et al)
2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights - FAIL (US support for legitimate human rights has never wavered on either side of the aisle - "waterboarding" debate is the "exception" that proves the rule)
3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - PARTIALLY TRUE (often for legitimate reasons, though)
4. Supremacy of the Military - FAIL (Similar percentage of GDP as during JFK's Presidency)
5. Rampant Sexism - EPIC FAIL
6. Controlled Mass Media - FAIL (nearly unlimited access to nearly unlimited alternative points of view)
7. Obsession with National Security - FAIL (9/11 was not make believe)
8. Religion and Government are Intertwined - SUPERFICIALLY TRUE (fear mongering by the left)
9. Corporate Power is Protected - PARTIALLY TRUE (There is an imbalance that we have not yet figured out)
10. Labor Power is Suppressed - EPIC FAIL (Unions have come to attack taxpayers and blue collar people, not the government)
11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts - FAIL (Big difference between freedom of expression and using tax money for stupidity)
12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment - EPIC FAIL (Sanctuary cities, repeat sex offenders, ad infinitum)
13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption - PARTIALLY TRUE (This is one of the many places where the underlying assumptions of the list are false to begin with - Mussolini was famous for eliminating corruption, suppressing the mafia and making the trains run on time)
14. Fraudulent Elections - PARTIALLY TRUE (but only in places like Detroit, Chicago, New Orleans and Las Vegas - NOT Omaha, San Diego, et al)

Good point, Ibby, but before seizing complete power, Hitler won political power legally. Hitler and the Nazis actually participated in a series of relatively free and fair Weimar elections prior to Hitler's appointment to serve as Chancellor in January, 1933. After that point, Hitler used the position to seize total control. The Nazis had used violence and intimidation unsuccessfully in the twenties, which resulted in Hitler being thrown in jail and banned from speaking. When he got out, he dedicated the National Socialist movement towards gaining power legally, just as the Saul Alinsky crowd is doing today.Ibanez wrote:Yeah, the won elections the same way Democrats did during the reign of Tammany Hall. I think it’s kind of interesting to make some of the more obvious connections and see where we’re going and how we explain ourselves or more interesting – how we defend ourselves - when we look in the mirror and challenge these notions

Re: We're on our way...
Damn, Chizzy.Chizzang wrote:Of course we've all read the list before - Today America has about two thirds of this list in play...
Previous Historical Examples:
Hitler's Germany
Mussolini's Italy
Franco's Spain
Suharto's Indonesia and several Latin American fascist regimes
What are the 14 things they all had in common...
1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism - constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.
2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights - intense of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.
3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.
4. Supremacy of the Military - Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized, war is always on the horizon.
5. Rampant Sexism - exclusively male-dominated societies, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Divorce, abortion and homosexuality are suppressed and the state is represented as the ultimate guardian of the family institution.
6. Controlled Mass Media - media is directly controlled by the government and large corporations
7. Obsession with National Security - Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.
8. Religion and Government are Intertwined - Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.
9. Corporate Power is Protected - The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.
10. Labor Power is Suppressed - Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.
11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts - Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked.
12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment - Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.
13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption - Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.
14. Fraudulent Elections - Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.
Sounds like you have "progressivism" nailed to a "T".
