If this is true, as far as Auburn athletics is concerned the SMU death penalty will look like a parking ticket. The school will not lose accreditation(that would punish thousands of innocent students) but the athletics department will be savaged.

Auburn won't get the death penalty and they won't lose their accreditation. Of all the unaccredited schools in the United State, none are public. Also, you have to be on probation first to get the death penalty, and Auburn isn't on probation. I'm also sure the NCAA learned its lesson with how things went down at SMU.

If anything is found in this investigation, serious changes will be made on the educational level, and they'll get an above-average penalty from the NCAA. But let's not get all dramatic about it and say that it's the end of Auburn from an athletic and institutional point of view.

Not the end of Auburn.

But, they could be relegated to Troy State status. Or University of Alabama at Auburn.

I'm basing the death penalty on that thread being true, which it very well may all be fiction. But if it is true, the NCAA will drop the hammer on Auburn and they will come down hard. I wouldn't be surprised if the school itself demolished its own athletics department just to save face.

Nothing will happen to the institution, sure people will be fired and it will be placed on probation but like I said nobody is going to screw a bunch of students who have nothing to do with Auburn athletics.

You guys are like listening to Finebaum on Sirius on my drive home. If you think what happens in athletics has anything to do with a school's accreditation you're crazy.

There's schools that have been in much worse shape scandal-wise & more importantly academic-wise than AU & nothing ever came close to happening.

Wait, I just read that if the Newton allegations are true, the state of Alabama will lose 3 seats in the US House of Representatives......

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), the regional accrediting agency, placed the university on probation. The agency cited the micromanagement by Lowder and the board of trustees, saying Auburn failed to prove that the university president has “ultimate control over the athletics program” as well as failing to prove that the board isn’t controlled by “a minority of board members.”
Sounds like more of the same to me, and that SACS could have egg on its face. If this is true, Auburn will be lucky to get Double Secret Probation.

Have you read anything about their probation with SACS a few years ago? Because athletics certainly had something to do with with it. :coffee:

And for those thinking "The NCAA will take years to delve into this", the FBI is involved. They found out about Auburn through another investigation about voting improprieties. They have most the evidence they need and don't give a fuck about what the NCAA has to say.

Feds don't fuck around. The conviction rate for federal indictments is I believe around 95% and they get their stuff done fast. Remember Vick? That whole process went by rather fast.

If the accreditation is pulled it ruins the chances for many AU students to get any kind of professional certification - i.e. anyone getting teaching certification or wanting to go to medical or law school or graduate school won't be able to.
I agree it would have to be proven that entire institutional structure at AU was one complex, mafia style, money laundering scheme. But its not so empty of a threat, they could include a caveat that would revoke their accreditation within a four year span to give the incoming freshmen and other underclassmen to transfer, and their juniors and seniors to graduate :thefan:

You absoultely do not have to be on probation to get the death penalty. Especially severe infractions can warrant it on their own...the kind of which are described in the rather long story that was linked earlier. So if the story linked is true, then death penalty probably would be forthcoming.

There are fates worse than death. From what I have read this morning, Auburn's football program may not be killed because of the effect it would have on other SEC schools, but would be rendered a vegetable (50+ schollie reductions for 4 years)

Yeah, I think Auburn is all in so this thread is pointless from that perspective.

It was pointless from the beginning, since a vacated game by Auburn still equals a loss for UTC, but the rest of it is interesting to discuss.

I would give credibility to Jelly's lengthy post on the first page (thanks for posting that BTW) simply because of the Fed's going after Bobby Lowder as part of the investigation into Colonial Bancshares and Taylor, Bean, and Whitaker. That is the absolute truth and the feds have already raided the offices of both entities earlier this year. That is a HUGE case!!!!!

For the feds to stumble across the money laundering to the athletes as part of the investigation into Colonial is perfectly plausible. For that reason alone I would think this has legs.
