What will REALLY make these scanners unpopular is that they are slow as molasses.

If you've never been through one, here's what it involves:

-Remove EVERYTHING from your pockets (including non-metallics like your wallet)
-Stand in the scanner with your hands up for a few seconds.
-Stand off to the side for another little while while they process and look at your image.
-Recollect all your stuff.

It doesn't sound all that bad, but it was rather annoying watching half-a-dozen people go through the metal detector while I stood around waiting. Next time I will try to pay closer attention and get in the old-fashioned metal detector line.
Thread-killer extraordinaire.

I haven't flown commercially for probably 15 years, so I don't have any personal experience,
but I rather doubt that most female TSA employees qualify for "hot" status.

Different method: selective intelligence-based profiling, more behavioral than race based, although I'm sure they scrutinize anyone with passports or Visas from places like Yemen or Pakistan more heavily. Oh yeah, they don't care if you have liquids, and 1st class passengers on El Al get steak knives:

Israeli security: effective, good and does not involve full body searches at random.
TSA security: largerly ineffective, bad, and involves sexual assualt.

Yahoo! News reports today a member of the House from FL who is calling for TSA to be reduced or eliminated over this, and in the interim is asking airpots to outst TSA in favor of private contractors, who apparently can expand and contract in respose to peak periods like Thanksgiving and Christmas much easier. This IS allowed under federal law, and is SOP at SFO, where TSA can't get enough people to work because the pay doesn't match living expenses there.

Unfortunately for those like me who would dearly love for TSA to go away, this Rep is apparently tainted. He got campaign contributions from one of the potential contractors. That might well be the thorn that keeps this great thing from happening.

I pass through TSA almost every week...
I've probably been frisked hundreds of times in the past 9 years they've been around
and true they are a confused and perhaps poorly run, certainly sketchy in the management department for sure but all-in-all I got no problems with them

I'll tell you what I see more than bad TSA agents is bad human beings - yeah - crappy people - sh!tty people treating the agents like dirt... that's what I see more than agents being dickheads - I see dickheads dressed as normal people harassing agents

To answer your first question, ABC, NBC, CBS (and obviously CONK,er, FOXNews) have run multiple reports saying these measures would not have stopped the underwear bomber or the shoe bomber.

And to answer your second comment, tell that to a Southwest Airlines exec:
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142 ... 28936.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
"With people getting partially molested at checkpoints, all that is going to be a real shock for them," said Greg Wells, senior vice president of operations at Southwest Airlines. "TSA will create an issue for us. It's going to slow things down."
Or to this poor girl:

I don't think private contractors are the way to go on this. I also do not think that TSA should be abolished.

Somebody has to do security screening, and I would prefer there be more oversight than there would be if DynCorp was doing the screening. However, I say this with the hope that one day we might be able to shape airport security policy with more emphasis on common sense and what actually work, rather than political correctness and frisking old blue haired ladies in the name of fairness.

Right now, our security policies (like most of law enforcement) are shaped primarily by the desire to not appear to be singling anyone out. This is why our security policies are not effective. Every single time we randomly search an airline traveler who obviously has no possibility of being a bad actor, we waste valuable time and resources. Plus, when we do this we are actually harming the mission of making airline travel as safe as possible because we let the real bad actors know that we are not actively searching them out because of charateristics that might suggest they are terrorists.

I think TSA is the right way to go, but DHS has just done a very poor job with their mandate and their methods.

TSA has been around since what, 2002? 2003? That is less than 10 years. I was a cop for 17 years, so there is no TSA screener in existence who has been doing it as long as I did. It is no myth that you get treated poorly in public service. I do see sh!tty customers in the airport and I sympathize with the screeners, but I can tell you that the crap I have seen TSA agents pull would get you serious brick time if not eventual termination as a cop on the average police department.

The TSA people need to grow a thicker skin or get out. That's what I did when I got fed up with it. I decided it was better to find something else to do rather than be turned into a bitter a$$hole by total strangers who don't know any better.

Now, this is offensive to some people, but given the circumstances, I'd say the TSA agent acted approprately. He appeared to be trying to be comforting to the boy.

BUT... did you notice all the TSA agents standing around doing nothing? They were likely watching so they could back the guy up when he got accused of fondling the kid. All those resources and time wasted so TSA could perform a truly random search.

Terrorists are not randomly scattered throughout the population.
