Big South shocker: CCU home playoff game, HAHA @ Liberty
Ok, as a CSU alum, I'm gonna take it now: We sucked this year. I know. CCU put the worst whipping in school history on us last week, literally. CSU has never been beaten by that large a margin. And it earned Coastal a home 1-AA playoff game!! Go Chants, wish you guys luck in every game except when you play CSU.
And a big HAHA at Liberty. Not against their players or coaches. But I remember the last 4-5 months many Liberty fans basically said the Big South auto-bid was all but guaranteed to the Flames, and that they saw "no real challenges" in the Big South.
Never underestimate anyone.
So what a stunner. Coastal Carolina's season seemed to be spiralling a bit a few weeks ago in the wrong direction. And lo and behold.......they finish as the 2010 Big South Champions, Big South auto-bid, and get a home game!!!!!
Congrats Coastal. You guy's 2010 season reminds me of the 2005 Charleston Southern team, which started 2-4, and rode a end of season 5 game winning streak to the Big South title. You guys put it on them yankees coming to Conway!!

70-3, Bucs. Go down to DIII, you might compete there. What a joke that program is. I tried to see the good in it, but now, thanks to comments like this, it's easier to see the bad in it.

The compliment was to Coastal. They, in my opinion, are the sole Big South Champion for 2010.jcmanson wrote:Thanks for the compliment, further proof of our dominance of the league.
Liberty University, Big South Champions 4 years in a row.
They are the team HOSTING a 1-AA playoff game after they were nearly written off a few weeks ago.
I NEVER buy the idea of shared conference titles. Not when everyone played each other. Sure, Stoney Brook could claim bragging rights over Coastal. But Coastal is repping the Big South in the playoffs. The trophy should go in their trophy case.
I hate that they had to put a 70-3 beatdown on my CSU Bucs to get there, but hey, they did what they had to do to get in the playoffs. As our rival up the coast, I hate to see them have too much success. But I hate nothing more than arrogant fans writing off other teams in a conference when in fact the conference is very competitive. Some Liberty fans were basically shrining themselves up there with the App States of 1-AA and writing off any chance the Big South would be represented by anyone but them in the playoffs.
To see it be not just not Liberty or Stony Brook, but Coastal who no one thought had a chance weeks ago is kinda cool.
The Big South Conference has been a football conference for 9 seasons now, and 5 different teams have won a Big South Crown or "share" of it, with VMI, PC the only two that haven't. This conference is very competitive. Maybe in 2011, no one will jump to early conclusions!
Go Coastal, beat them yankees from the Land of Lincoln next week!!

Oh, and when you compare resources, facilities, admin committment, etc, you'd see that Charleston Southern should NEVER beat Coastal, EVER. CCU has an advantage in every single category in fielding a program. Yet, you have lost to us. Not this year, we took a whipping. But with CCU's resources, CSU should never even be close to Coastal, much less beat them. Whats wrong up there?

Sure, if Coastal is still hanging on to that "co" label. Their coach and staff after the game told reporters they don't deserve a share, that "CSU beat us, they are the champs".Ibanez wrote:bucs90 wrote:Ok, as a CSU alum, I'm gonna take it now: We sucked this year. You have the largest school in the Big South (maybe, SB may be larger). You by far have the best facilities in the conference. Most money for athletics.
All things considered, Liberty should win the Big South EVERY year, without any challenges at all, just like LU fans said in the preseason. What gives? Why aren't you guys in the SEC yet like your fans seem to think you belong?
But I can't get that upset at an LU fan talking trash. My senior year on the field with CSU, we beat Liberty 25-0, @ Liberty, so they dont really bother me that much.
But there is no logical reason why LU shouldn't win the BSC every single season. At least Coastal can say they've only had a team for 7 years!

Re: Big South shocker: CCU home playoff game, HAHA @ Liberty
Well, since we hired a legit coach and started putting money into the program (facilities, etc) we've gone 6-5, then 4 times at least sharing for the league title. I'd say that's pretty much as good as you can get, even the best teams don't win every single game in conference, regardless of the conference. Gonzaga loses in the WCC in basketball, they shouldn't ever lose, but they do.

HAHA!!! You upset? "Why are you even talking to us?" huh? Well, that sums up the attitude of 99% of Liberty fans. You guys think you are on a throne overlooking the rest of the Big South. You guys, students also, think your sh** dont stink. I notice you stopped your backwards trend at 06, as to not include the 2005 loss LU had @ CSU. So, from 2000-2009, Liberty lost 20% of their games vs CSU. Not good stat for CSU. But worse for LU when you consider the massive imbalance in resources of those two programs. You guys should NEVER lose to us, much less even have a close game. But you do.jcmanson wrote:You keep hanging your hat on that 1 game while we continue to leave you in the dust.bucs90 wrote:But I can't get that upset at an LU fan talking trash. Let me say a few things:
Liberty U has by far the best stadium in the Big South. Best football history in D-1 of all BSC schools. Great recruiting region. Large student body and huge alumni base for fundraising. In fact, there is no logical reason why Liberty should NOT be the Big South Champion every single season.
Yet....
The 1st few years of the Big South, the conference was won by Gardner Webb (which had just moved up from D2) Coastal Carolina (which didn't have a team until 2003) and yes, even Charleston Southern got in on the championship ring handouts in 2005, and as the LU fan said, we should be in D3 "where we belong", right?
As for resources go, no one tops Liberty in the BSC, except maybe Stony Brook.
As facilities go, LU is probably tops, with SB and CCU next. GWU, VMI and PC are the second tier. And Charleston Southern by far has the sorriest facilities. CSU has by far the worst football history, was a D3 team in 93, skipped D2 and went straight to D1-AA, struggled, and then finally got it to respectability. As for alumni base, CSU is dead last. CSU didn't even exist until 1964.
And all along, Liberty has envisioned itself as deserving to be in 1-A, as far superior to all other BSC teams, but in fact, considering the history of football in the BSC + Liberty's resources, LU is not performing up to par.
So, with all due respect Mr. Liberty fan, if the worst thing you are accusing Charleston Southern of is playing above our level, well, guilty as charged. We do play above the level that our resources would allow most people. Are our players simply playing above their physical capability sometimes? Or are our coaches recruiting above the level they should given what they have to work with? Either way, you're right- we do overachieve considering what we have for resources.
Maybe the Flames should stop criticizing a team that plays above itself sometimes, and start analyzing why LU plays far below the level they should be so often. After all, you guys spent the whole offseason reminding us of how you were too good for the Big South remember? Thats why it's funny.
Anyhow..........good luck to Coastal Carolina, the 1st team in Big South history to host a 1-AA playoff game. You guys made a remarkable turnaround, and enjoy the beatdown you gave the Bucs, I promise 2011 our team will be much better!
( Oh, and P.S. to Liberty- This just in, the SEC rejected you guy's application to become a football member)

Yes, it hurts to lose to a rival, even more to lose the way you guys put it on us. But we understood, you guys needed a huge win towards the playoffs, and you guys repping the Big South with a home game makes the whole BSC look good.
I've always respected Coastal. David Bennett is as classy a coach there is anywhere in college football. I just admire they way Coastal fought the past month, despite people writing them off for the year. Who woulda thought 5 weeks ago that Coastal would be hosting a 1-AA playoff game? Kinda awesome.
CSU has a young QB that is gonna be a star. He rushed for 100 yds vs Kentucky, is a true freshman, and they are gonna build the team around him. You guys beat him down , and no way around that. We finished 3-8. Pretty bad. Starting QB went down for the year in the LU game, and that hurt us bad. But we'll fix it for 2011.
I just hope next preseason some fans (Uh hum, LU) are a bit more humble about season prediction.

Re: Big South shocker: CCU home playoff game, HAHA @ Liberty
LU is going to be the favorite again, as we were this year. And we won this year. No reason to change that. It's a 3 team race, with LU as the favorite. Presby/G-W/CSU/VMI will be the bottom 4, CCU/SBU/LU will compete for the auto-bid.
Re: Big South shocker: CCU home playoff game, HAHA @ Liberty
That is very good. Your offensive coach is a good one too, Brandon Streeter.......former coach at Charleston Southern.ToTheLeft wrote:Well, since we hired a legit coach and started putting money into the program (facilities, etc) we've gone 6-5, then 4 times at least sharing for the league title. And for those who do think CSU belongs in D3.......we have a freshman QB that is gonna change this league. He rushed for 100+ vs Kentucky and put quite a frustrating day out against an SEC team. He took a thumping at CCU and some other teams. But give it 1-2 years.
I've always thought this: NEVER doubt any team in the Big South. This time next year, it could be VMI or PC hosting a playoff game.

Taking a shot at my team that just won the conference, especially after you lose 70-3, however, doesn't fly. Don't care if it was because some of our fans said things you didn't like, I take offense to it.
And no, VMI and PC won't make the playoffs, nor would they host if they did make it.
And "far below" the level? We've gone from 1-10 to 4 time conference champs. We've lost twice in conference play in the last FOUR SEASONS. Give me a break dude. Your rumors of LU's demise are greatly exaggerated.
Re: Big South shocker: CCU home playoff game, HAHA @ Liberty
You think? With your facilities, history, alumni base support, resources, compared to the rest of the conference, there shouldn't be a year in which you aren't the favorite.ToTheLeft wrote:LU is going to be the favorite again, as we were this year. But the first few BSC titles were won by GWU and CCU, who either moved up from D2, or didn't exist until 03, and Charleston Southern, who someone said should go back to D3 where we belong, and lately Liberty is having it's turn. Next team to get hot may be GWU, or SB, or GWU. Who knows.
But preseason arrogance and acting as if your crap dont stink will only do one thing in the end: Cause the rest of us to remind you that Coastal Carolina is repping the Big South in the 1-AA playoffs with a home game. They've had a football team for 8 seasons, and have 4 BSC titles. With LU's resources, history, facilities, there is no way a start-up team, or a team just up from D2 (GWU), or a team that should be D3 (CSU) should EVER take the trophy away from LU. Whats the deal with that?

Yeah, LU the last 10 years is performing far below where they should. Especially in the Big South, which isn't exactly the SoCon.ToTheLeft wrote:I've been one to praise CSU for doing more with less.bucs90 wrote:

And how do you know PC or VMI wont make the playoffs? Guess what. In 2003, CSU was 1-11. In 2005, if the BSC had an auto-bid, CSU would've won the tie breaker and went to the playoffs.
Thats the problem I mentioned with many LU fans, and if you are not that type, my bad, but you have some peers that are. That think they are so superior to the rest of the conference that no one should "even talk to us".
What I'm saying is with LU's resources, even in a "down" year, there is no way they should be anything other than top 2 in the conference. They have D-1A facilities and resources. So the message is, stay humble right NOW amidst your excellent 4 years, b/c one day you'll be looking up at CCU, GWU, CSU, or yes, even PC or VMI. It's cyclical.
The preseason arrogance of many LU fans earned the fun poking they'll get right now.
And again, good luck Coastal, rep the BSC well!

They've had a football team for 8 seasons, and have 4 BSC titles. With LU's resources, history, facilities, there is no way a start-up team, or a team just up from D2 (GWU), or a team that should be D3 (CSU) should EVER take the trophy away from LU. Whats the deal with that?
1. The Athletic Administration was different then, and the facilities were not as nice. It's not the same things you see today.
2. The money wasn't there.
3. The coach was a terrible playcaller and game manager.
We got a real coach, an AD who brought us a lot of money and improvements in facilities, and we've won 4 conference titles. If you think football is as cut and dry as "he who has the most money, wins", why play for CSU? Why not just play for fun, since CSU will never ever win? Why waste your years in college?
Oh, wait, you went there since you knew you could win. And you did win. But just because LU seemed like a paradise compared to CSU back then, it wasn't. Things weren't being run well. They are now. And Rocco just this year got his own program set up with all his own recruits. And he already has 4 rings. So anyone can win on any given day, but over the past 4 seasons, LU lost twice in conference. That's pretty much as good as you can ask for. Our losses have come at the wrong times, sure, but LU's record is untouchable in this league since Rocco came in.
Keep living in the past, which is where CSU's best times are. LU fans live in the present and future, since that's where our best times are.
Re: Big South shocker: CCU home playoff game, HAHA @ Liberty
SAME THING OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER. WE GET IT. MONEY FACILITIES RESOURCES BLAH BLAH BLAH.bucs90 wrote:Yeah, LU the last 10 years is performing far below where they should. Especially in the Big South, which isn't exactly the SoCon.ToTheLeft wrote:
I've been one to praise CSU for doing more with less.
LU sucked before Rocco. Everyone admits that. Why keep harping on it, it has nothing to do with right now. Just like your win over Liberty, which is ancient history in football terms. Last 10 years, LU hasn't been as good as we should. Last 4? We've been the class of the league. Only 2 losses in conference over 4 years, 4 straight titles or shared titles.
