Does it make a difference if you're driving a pos, have worn out clothing on, are a minority?

I used to go out on patrol from time to time with a relative who was a cop. I'd shoot the radar gun at cars and watch late model car after late model car go buy at 11 over the speed limit and we wouldn't move. Then some poor schmuck in a beat up late 70's chrysler would go by at 3 over the speed limit with a license plate light out and it was time to ROLL!

That's where the drugs were.

So message to some of you drug smugglers - dress like a sunday school teacher and get some decent wheels. I know it's simple but you'd be amazed how many don't get it.

I think profiling equals good police work, but this case does raise some constituional issues.
Technically, there is no low limit on how much you can confiscate. That being said, when you seize cash or assets, you have to pay the court costs associated with formally approprating the seizure. In our jurisdiction, court costs were just under $400. So, you were costing the city money if you grabbed the local dealer's wad that was under $400.

Generally speaking, the people who were having their cars and cash seized fell into all kind of demographic groups, because once you get up to the guys who were handling large sum of money, you weren't just talking about the black kid down on the corner with the gold grill. Those guys are just foot soldiers. The biggest seizure I was ever involved with was about 150 pounds of marijuana, about 75 grams of powder cocaine and about 10 cookies of crack. Along with pot brick presses, we seized about 375,000 bucks cash. All of this came as a result of a search warrant obtained after we stopped a guy and he turned out to have a pistol under his seat as well as about 50 grams of pot in his car. The big haul came on the warrant for his apartment. If I recall correctly, the stop was just a routine stop for a guy running a red light, and the rookie officer did some pretty good police work noticing the rear end of the pistol under the guy's seat.

So, there's another tip for the drug dealers: don't run red lights. Basically, make sure you look like you are squeaky clean and behave likewise. It is amazing how many guys just advertise what their primary source of income is.

But to steal the guy's cash with no proof of conviction is BS.
Mr. Appaholic,
I am obliged to agree with you on your remarks. This is nothing more than a locksmith that should have done the job he was hired to do and nothing more. Sadly, the government will never relinguish the unlawly seized currancy. Regardless of any unlawful behavior, this is government run amok!

It takes a team of those jack-asses to fight the other team of jack-asses - and I assure you the Feds will have a team of three piece suits on hand to bungle this thing up and lock it down

This dude needs to turn it into a no holds bared legalese free for all as well as make it as public a trial as possible

 At least make them spend the money on lawyers.

Without even reading your entire post I can just respond to the title of the thread by saying the DEA should be eliminated. That is my feeling on the DEA.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

What?

I never got a dime. Is there someone I can call to get my cut of all the money we seized?

Oh, you meant a welfare program for LOCAL, COUNTY, STATE and FEDERAL GOVERNMENTS.

Judging by the results of the so-called war on drugs it's where the not-so-good-at-the-job cops wait around to qualify for their bloated government pension checks.

Are you saying that a police officer's retirement is dependent on the money they seize in drug operations?

Now you're sounding like John St. Wronge.

No, I'm saying that since the DEA is colossally ineffective and the "War on Drugs" (why do we always declare war on things that aren't even aware of their own existence?) has been over for decades, the DEA must be the place where incompetent cops are put out to pasture to await retirement day.

Lose the DEA and the DOE and we could shortly be on our way to a financial condition that even the republicans couldn't screw up.

I agree, along with many other federal agencies.

As to this case, it appears the DEA is acting within the law. The question for me, and I think Jelly, is if the law should be a law. I think not, and I agree with him that the burden of proof is on the DEA...it's always on the prosecution, plaintiff, whatever name it would be in this case. It's hard to make a judgment based on this one article, given that both sides are most likely withholding information.

OK, because is sure sounded like you were being hyperbolic and tie-ing police retirments to drug seizures.

My bad.
