At this point, I'd say anything but making the playoffs is a fail, so:

"Good" year - Conference title and/or making the playoffs
"Better year" - Conference title or playoff appearance, and winning at least one game in the playoffs
"Best year" - Making a deep run into the playoffs ('97 was our best year under this criteria)
"Dream Season" - National title (one can dream, right?) :thumb:

You absolutely implied that the CAA gets preferential treatment when your conference doesn't. So OK, when was the last time a Southland had 7 DI wins and didn't make the playoffs?

Looking back, it would seem the only Southland team to not make the playoffs this century with 7 DI wins was SFA in 2003. They went 7-4. Villanova also went 7-4 (all DI) that year and also didn't make the playoffs.
The CAA does and I never expect the SLC to get 3 in the playoffs, thus I used a generalization (example)
It behooves me to say it but, some of you CAA fans are just like the FBS AQs. You just don't see it cause you have the same kind of blinders on. (boy is this going downhill fast)
I can sit here and look at both and actually see the similarities. The rhetoric is the same.

(FWIW - There was no CAA in 2002 and the SLC had UL-M. And if you are so stuck on thinking my original post was about the SLC...had we beaten SLU last year, and gone 8-3, I would not have wanted TXST in the playoffs. We weren't good enough, but it would have been a good/better season...for us.)

Yeah, I'm off today and I'm bored and in a feisty mood. Plus, on BCF, they are posting page after page of threads about nothing except about a new coach. All speculation as no real info has come out. It's really getting old and boring over there. I'm off this thread and gonna go watch something on Netflix.

Wow, you're kinda all over the place on this post.

The CAA does get 3 in the playoffs... ever since it became a 10+ team conference. The MVFC (then the Gateway) got 4 out of 8 teams in 2004, so the CAA isn't anywhere close to the record for percentage. The Southern also gets 3 teams in quite often. The Big Sky had 3 teams last year.

The Southland doesn't get 3 in the playoffs because there aren't 3 teams with 7+ DI wins. It has ZERO to do with the fact that you're the Southland.

Finally, no, there was no "CAA" in 2002, but that's semantics. That's like saying there was no MVFC before last year. There was, they just played under a different name. :)

Same for us, winning a SWAC title and the Bayou Classic is a good as it gets. Right now I'd take winning more than 2 games.

I understand the grumbling because it is kind of hollow not to play during the Holiday season. But we all need to be careful what we wish for. The same happened at App after missing them in 2003-2004. Good thing they kept Jerry around for 2005.
KC was never going anywhere after signing a 10-year contract extension following the 2007 playoff run. But it sure didn't stop the grumbling.

Not playing the last weekend in NOV or beyond sucks way more than not winning a Conference Crown. Everyone knows Richmond won the 2008 NC but how many remember they finished 3rd in the CAA South and JMU was a perfect 8-0 in conference play that season?

 Ask UNI how that MVFC trophy feels right about now. Think they'd trade places with NDSU?

BTW, UMass also was 3rd in the A10 in 1998 when they won it all.

Playoffs, but it's of course situational.

For instance, this has already been a better season than I anticipated. But we also return a ton of people next year, so a first round loss in 2011 might be dissappointing.

Or, if you're UNC perhaps it's your first winning season at DI. Then again if you're like all the UNC posters on this board, a good season would be anything bad enough to get Scott Downing fired. :thumb:

For me a successful season is nothing less then making the playoffs. I know that sounds arragant since there are teams that have never been in the playoffs. And, I can remember the day when just making the playoffs was huge because it was not common to do so. But after making them for so many years...and believing that you would never not make them when they were expanded to 20 teams. OUCH. A big reality check for the Griz.

A good season: making the playoffs
A real good season: winning in the playoffs
A great season: winning the NC

The 3 minute version aired on TV or the full 25 minute review online? The full 25 minute review is pure gold.

I don't think it does. When you make it so many years in a row, it becomes the norm.

I think it's relative.

Here's what I mean. If your school is used to making noise in the playoffs, then you're not going to be satisfied with anything less. If your school doesn't have much of a playoff history, making the playoffs is going to make you ecstatic. But personnel plays a factor in this, too. If you're losing a significant chunk of your squad to graduation and you're backfilling with freshpeople vice JCers, you tend to EXPECT a down year. But if you finish in the middle-to-upper portion of the conference despite that, that is a good year regardless of if you make the playoffs. On the other hand, if you have an experienced squad that has been to the playoffs before but this year they are hovering around .500, that 's a bad year FOR YOU. .500 might be a good year for a rebuilding squad.

Sorry, that's how I feel. As long as UD makes the playoffs, I really don't care if it's because they won the conference or got an at-large. Put it this way, I could rattle off all the years the Hens made the playoffs, but I have no clue whether they won the conference that year. My order is..

National Championship > Runner-Up > Made playoffs > Didn't make playoffs

That's it. I don't care about winning seasons or conference championships (or Lambert Cups). :)

YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT LAMBERT CUPS!!! BLASPHEMY!!

Seriously, I don't have much to add to this thread, but when has that ever stopped anybody from posting something on the internet.

I agree about the playoffs. As a JMU fan, I'd be embarrassed to wear a 2008 CAA Champions T-shirt after Richmond won the NC.

Don't get me wrong, conference championships are nice, but they are simply a means to an end - a playoff berth.

And for JMU, I think making the playoffs is a good season.

As a long time supporter of App, making the playoffs has always been my yardstick of success. We've had some great teams the last 5 years but the playoffs still should remain the goal. Once they expand the playoffs to 24 teams I would have to add winning at least one game in the playoffs as about any SoCon, BSC, MVC or CAA team with 7 wins will get in.

If I were a fan before my freshman and sophomore years in 2004 and 2005 when we won back to back BSC titles, playoff trips, and an upset of the #1 seed, I'd say 7-4 was a good season. These days, anything short of a playoff trip is a disappointment.
