The map doesn't matter. It is the consencus of some of the world's largest health org and much of the catholic church that the recent develoopment will save many lives. This directly implies that you were not doing the right thing before and you were essentially killing people with your stupid dogma. Thank god at least your pope understands this.
Read your history Hen. The catholic church has a horrendous record of dealing with plagues using scripture/dogma rather than science.

Actually it can documented that the percentage of population afflicted by AIDS in Africa is LOWER in countries in which Catholicism is more prevalent -- and that's because more people in those countries are practicing abstinence.
Abstinence is 100% effective.
Show some documentation then please.
2003 statistics from the World Factbook of the US Central Intelligence Agency, shows Burundi at 62% Catholic with 6% AIDS infection rate. Angola’s population is 38% Roman Catholic and has 3.9% AIDS rate. Ghana is 63% Christian, with in some regions as much as 33% Catholic and has 3.1% AIDS rate. Nigeria, divided almost evenly between the strongly Muslim north and Christian and "animist" south, has 5.4% AIDS rate.
Strongly Christian Uganda continues to frustrate condom-pushing NGO’s by maintaining its abstinence and fidelity AIDS prevention programs and one of the lowest rates of AIDS in Africa, at 4.1%. Uganda’s population is listed by the CIA Factbook as 33% Roman Catholic and 33% Protestant.
Of African countries with low Catholic populations, Botswana is typical with 37.3% AIDS, one of the highest in Africa, and 5% of the total population Catholic.

Associate Press: Reacting to the expanded statement, a senior official with the United Nations AIDS agency said: "I think it will have a very positive impact ... Catholics consider the Pope infallible. He cannot err in what he's teaching. That way, they will now be able to use condoms, and I can see further decline in the AIDS epidemic."
Sheila Tlou spoke with The Associated Press during a meeting Tuesday in Johannesburg in which UNAIDS announced a nearly 20 percent drop in new HIV infections around the world over the past decade — largely due to increased condom use. Tlou, the eastern and southern Africa regional director for UNAIDS and a former Botswana health minister, said other churches should follow the pope's lead.
More than 20 million people across Africa are infected with HIV — more than the rest of the world combined.

Interesting... so there has been a "nearly 20 percent drop in new HIV infections around the world over the past decade " but the Pope just came out with this last week. Also interesting that less than 20% of Africans are Catholics. Even more interesting is that you have no figures on how many of the 20M are Catholic. You're gonna have to do better than this DB.D1B wrote:Associate Press: Reacting to the expanded statement, a senior official with the United Nations AIDS agency said: "I think it will have a very positive impact ... Re: Pope knee deep in **** again....
You're pulling this from out of your ass. You have no support for this statement. There is none. If you have it, show me documented proof that death rates from AIDs in the countries mentioned -- Burundi; Angola; Ghana, or Nigeria -- were statistically higher in years prior to 2003 than other areas of Africa.D1B wrote:Joe we discussed this before. Indeed, here is a website that proves just the OPPOSITE re: 2001 deaths. The only country with a significant Catholic population with a six-figure number is Nigeria, and this is because of the overall size of the county. For comparison sake, it had 170,000 deaths in a population of 154,000,000. By comparison, non-Catholic Ethiopia (.08% is Catholic) had 160,000 deaths, with a population of only 82,000,000. If Ethiopia were as large as Nigeria, it would have over 300,000 deaths ...

Why don't you simply agree with me that abstention, as a first-line of defense, is the better option.
These numbers are very persuasive, and you know it. The numbers show that the more Catholic an African nation is, the slower AIDS spreads and the number of AIDS death decreases.
Re: Pope knee deep in **** again....
Joe, of course it's a better option ultimately, but that type of behavior change takes time, especially in subsaharan, violently paternalistic africa.JoltinJoe wrote:Come on, I agreed with you that if one isn't going to abstain from high risk sex, then he should use a condom.D1B wrote:

Again, I'm on record as applauding the catholics for their efforts, I just wish they would added condoms to their bag of tricks decades ago. Lives would have been saved - you would have to agree.
