NASL Concludes Successful AGM and Finalizes USSF Application
Image
The North American Soccer League (“NASL”) recently concluded its 2010 Annual General Meeting held in Miami, Florida on November 7th and 8th. The meeting was highlighted by the approval of two additional teams for the 2011 season - the NSC Minnesota Stars and the Atlanta Silverbacks - and their inclusion in the application to the United States Soccer Federation for sanctioning as a Division II league. The completed application, which was originally submitted with six teams on September 28, 2010, was submitted to the Federation immediately following the conclusion of the meeting.

The application also includes San Antonio (which will commence play in 2012) and an additional team to be announced (which will commence play in 2013). The NASL is looking forward to favorable consideration of the application by the Board of Directors of the USSF at its meeting on November 21 in Toronto, Canada.

“This is an exciting time for the NASL as it nears the finish line in its two year quest for second division sanctioning from the USSF. We were encouraged by fans to return second division soccer to Atlanta after a two season hiatus and are thrilled that over twenty years of continuous professional play in Minnesota will continue in 2011 and beyond ” said Aaron Davidson CEO of the NASL.

Club owners and general managers will continue working on developing the schedule for the 2011 season over the coming weeks. The NASL plans to release the opening weekend schedule of games later this month.

"It's Called Football" has learned this afternoon from sources within NASL that heading into the USSF meeting this weekend ownership is expecting to receive only a temporary sanction from the governing body.

The NASL announced last week that the eight team league - which is to include: Atlanta Silverbacks, Carolina RailHawks, FC Edmonton, FC Tampa Bay, Montreal Impact, Miami FC Blues, NSC Minnesota Stars and the Puerto Rico Islanders - would be applying for sanctioning as the Division 2 league in North America.

Since then, Canadian Soccer News has broken the news on a pair of items (here and here) that could affect the success of the sanctioning bid but the temporary sanction is now said to be, "the most likely scenario to play out.'

NASL sources say that a full sanctioning for the league wouldn't come until the USSF AGM in February.

Crystal Palace Baltimore to Sit Out 2011 Season

Crystal Palace Baltimore announced today that they will not be fielding a team in the North American Soccer League (NASL) during the 2011 season in order to restructure with an intended re-launch for the 2012 NASL season. The re-launch will include a complete re-branding of the club to coincide with opening a soccer facility in downtown Baltimore.
Image
In addition, the club announced that it is ending its four year relationship with Crystal Palace FC of England’s Championship Division. Crystal Palace Baltimore was the first trans-Atlantic partnership of its kind in North America but the relationship between the clubs could not survive the financial struggles that resulted in Crystal Palace FC entering administration in England.

The club is currently working with the City of Baltimore to secure a venue for 2012 and beyond. “We want to be downtown and believe doing so will allow us to better connect to our fans and the City” said Pete Medd, part-owner and President of Crystal Palace Baltimore. “We would like to thank our loyal fans who have stuck with us despite not having a place to call home and we are committed to giving them what they deserve and what all of our future fans in Baltimore deserve; a venue that honors their loyalty and commitment to the club.”

FC Edmonton Names New Head Coach
Image

FC Edmonton is pleased to announce the signing of its new Head Coach, Harry Sinkgraven. Sinkgraven comes highly recommended by former FC Edmonton coaches Dwight Lodeweges and Hans Schrijver.

“When Dwight and Hans first told us about Harry, we felt like he would be the perfect coach to pick up where the two left off,” said General Manager Mel Kowalchuk. “Harry has gone through the same Dutch coaching program as Hans and even has experience working with both Dwight and Hans back in Holland. We’re happy to get him signed and expect the transition to be almost seamless.”

San Antonio Scorpions FC Will Be Newest NASL Team

Jan 10, 2011 - It was announced several months ago that a San Antonio team would be joining the reborn NASL in 2012. Now that team has a name: San Antonio Scorpions FC. They will play their games at South Texas Area Regional (STAR) Soccer Complex in a yet-to-be-contsructed 5,400-seat stadium.

Owner Gordan Hartman said the team is seeking $8 million in public funds to help build the stadium, which would be expandable to 18,000 seats with the idea of potentially hosting a MLS team. The soccer complex currently has 13 regulation fields and is mostly used for youth soccer tournaments.

"STAR Soccer cost $10 million, and approximately half of the funding came from private sources," Hartman said during the press conference, noting construction will have to begin this spring in order to be ready for the start of next year. "We intend to build on the infrastructure already in place to create an up-to-date-yet-affordable playing facility for the Scorpions that can also host high school and collegiate tournaments as well as performances and other special events. To accomplish all this, we’re seeking approximately $8 million in public funding for a venue that will serve our community in many ways, not just pro soccer."

USSF Board of Directors Narrowly Approves 1-year Provisional Sanctioning of NASL; AGM Must Still Ratify
Image
In a narrow 6-5 vote with both U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati and MLS Commissioner Don Garber abstaining, the USSF Board of Directors approved the North American Soccer League (NASL) to provisionally sanction Division 2 pro soccer in the U.S. for 2011. The approval came with a special 1-year provisional status and must be ratified in today’s Annual General Meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada.

According to sources close to the situation, U.S. Soccer’s review committee made up of Carlos Cordeiro, Executive Vice President Mike Edwards and Secretary General Dan Flynn met with NASL executives on Thursday evening. The committee reviewed the NASL’s financial documents and judged whether the proposed league met the tough new U.S. Soccer standards set for division 2 pro soccer. The committee had tough questions for the NASL in Thursday evening’s meeting and NASL officials left the meeting with good reason to be concerned

Ottawa to Join NASL
Image
Posted on Tue, Jun 21, 2011

June 20, 2011 (Ottawa, ON.): The North American Soccer League (NASL) today announced that Ottawa, Ontario has been awarded an expansion team. The new team will be owned by the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group (OSEG) and play home games at Lansdowne Park. The club will commence League play upon the completion of a major stadium reconstruction project which is expected to commence later this year. The North American Soccer League is a Division II men’s outdoor professional soccer league with teams based in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.

“We welcome Ottawa to the NASL,” said League Commissioner David Downs. “As we continue to expand and collectively grow professional soccer in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean, Ottawa is a natural market with a vibrant business community, large soccer fan base and an exceptional ownership group.”

OSEG partner John Pugh, who is also the CEO and Owner of the Ottawa Fury Soccer Club, has been named President of the new NASL franchise. Pugh says he’s committed to building a successful team on and off the field: "This will be, by far, the highest calibre of soccer we’ll have seen in Ottawa since the 2007 FIFA Men’s U-20 World Cup,” said Pugh. “We are committed to fielding a competitive team from the get-go, providing a lively, entertaining game day experience for families and establishing strong ties with all soccer players and fans across the region. It’s a privilege to have this opportunity.”

Ottawa’s new 24,000 seat soccer-friendly downtown stadium will be built to exacting FIFA specifications. The City of Ottawa and OSEG are partners in the project and, Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson says it’s an exciting time for the entire city: “Residents are excited about NASL soccer, our bid for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, CFL football and other events that will take place in Ottawa, thanks to a newly redeveloped Lansdowne Park," said Mayor Watson.
