Looks like another stats vs winners discussion brewing as Lincecum, Sanchez, Bumgarner and Cain don't appear on the list.SunCoastBlueHen wrote:Man, I don't think I have ever seen Joe so petty and bitter.JoltinJoe wrote:

I'm not dissing the Phillies staff, just the use of statistics as the only basis to rate pitchers.

Man, I wish I could be like you. I mean, who wouldn't love being a fan of a team that won most of their titles before I was even born. I mean, I wasn't alive, but I'm so proud of the Phillies winning the 1915 pennant. There's nothing better than seeing a NY fan grind his teeth and yell at walls when they can't just throw money at somebody and get them. And to think, pitchers and catchers don't report for another 2.5 months, so we get to watch Joe go through all the stages of grief during that time. Especially considering that AJ Burnett is still the Yanks 3rd pitcher!!!![]()

But when you are a Yankees fan, it is actually possible to have been alive for eight World Series championships by your favorite team, and still be a young man.

Twas The Night before Cliffmas and all through the Park,
Roy Halladay, Roy Oswalt and Cole Hamels embark,
on a new training session to start off the day
and attempt to erase the memory of the black, orange and gray.
The rest of the Phillies asleep in their beds,
with visions of Championships playing in their heads.
The Phanatic on his 4 wheeler and Charlie in his cap,
looks down his line-up, and batting 5th there's a gap.
When all of a sudden, arouse such a chatter,
ESPN was on the scene to see whats the matter!
Away from the Rangers he flew like a flash!
Blew off the Yankees and told them to keep their cash!
When what to our wondering eyes should appear!?
A familiar face of a man who was just here!
With a nasty curve ball and a fastball that's quick,
an addition to a rotation that's already sick!
The most powerful rotation that's ever been seen!
The Big 3 is now 4, cause Cliffs back on the team!
Now Halladay,Hamels,Oswalt and Lee!
Victorino,Howard,Rollins and Utley!
From the NLCS to the World Series we'll go!
100 win season? Ask Rollins he'll know!
Cliff came to our team cause he said it felt right,
Merry Cliffmas to All and to all a good night!

Re: phiLEEdelphia! Cliff Lee Agrees To Return To PhilLEEs
Just watched the Cliff Lee press conference. Quick summary: He said the Yanks fans spitting/pouring beer/whatever on his wife did not influence his decision - issue was overblown. He likes Philly better than New York. Likes the area and the schools. Finds Philly to be a very interesting city. Says that once you make a certain amount of money you're set and it's more important to find the right situation than get the most money. Said the Phillies give him the best chance to win a world championship. Enjoys playing in a packed stadium every night with great fans. Says he spoke with his good buddy Jayson Werth yesterday and Werth wasn't happy at all that he's going to the Phils.

Re: phiLEEdelphia! Cliff Lee Agrees To Return To PhilLEEs
... and version # 2
"Twas the Night Before Cliff-Mas" by Christine A. Glatsky
Twas the 13th of December
And midnight was near
Approaching the end
Of a great Philly year
The Flyers had battled
Lord Stanley was close
but the Boston series miracle
Gave us reason to boast
The Eagles and McNabb
Had parted their ways
And now Starship 7
Was guiding our Sleigh
The Sixers, while modest,
Were starting to shine
A team on the rise?
We'll find out with time
The Phillies, as always,
Had, too, made us proud
But the silence of Howard at the plate
Still rang loud
So it's the 13th of December
And all through my home
Monday Night Football was ending
I was checking my phone
When all of a sudden
My eyes and ears froze
Whispers, then murmurs
I saw the buzz grow
Could it be happening?
Could this be fact?
The arm of Cliff Lee
In the void of Werth's bat?
Then all of a sudden
The Tweet said it all
Mighty Lee is returning
to our boys of the Fall!
Rosenthal, Zolecki,
Stark and Heyward chimed in
WIP proclaimed it,
Then ESPN
I texted, I tweeted
Midnight phone calls were placed
The Phillies were King!
The Yanks had fallen from grace!
And what, to my wandering eyes, should appear
But the greatest rotation EVER,
Baseball's most feared.
On Halladay! On Hamels!
On Oswalt and Lee!
With batting from
Rollins, and Shane, and Utley
Because talk of this lineup
Arose quite a clatter;
But let's not forget
The sheer force of our batters
My eyes wouldn't close
Until quarter to 2
When I woke, I double-checked
Lee IS back! It's TRUE!
To the fans of Philadelphia
An era brand new;
Merry Christmas to all,
And to the Yankees - F YOU.

Yipee. I can't wait to follow the Braves on their quest for second place in the NL East.
And MLB wonders why a regular season NFL game gets better ratings than world series games. Baseball will always suck and be inferior to the NFL until a salary cap is put in place. ƒu*k baseball.

That much I agree with, even as a fan of a team that is a top 10 payroll. If I live in Pittsburgh, KC, etc I couldn't give less of a fugg about baseball any more. They have no shot at competing.Pwns wrote:Baseball will... be inferior to the NFL until a salary cap is put in place.

I also agree. I'm glad that the Phillies are able to spend, and therefore compete, but I'd rather see a cap in place so that all 30 teams could compete on more equal footing.93henfan wrote:That much I agree with, even as a fan of a team that is a top 10 payroll. I rarely watch a game that does not involve the Green Bay Packers until the playoffs, and even then it's just not as exciting as college football.

Re: phiLEEdelphia! Cliff Lee Agrees To Return To PhilLEEs
I saw the press conference too. It just made me more disappointed he didn't sign with New York. He really is a class guy.93henfan wrote:Just watched the Cliff Lee press conference. One correction: in saying that the story about what happened to his wife in NY was overblown, he actually denied the reports that anyone spit or threw beer at his wife, although apparently she did get some verbal abuse. Here's his quote:
"That was way overblown," Lee said. "No one came up to my wife and spit on her. You go to any stadium, fans start cheering. Especially in the postseason, fans are going to say something; they're going to do things like that. ... That story was way overblown; it was false and had zero to do with anything."
