MLB Hall Of Fame Ballot
The BBWAA is currently balloting for next years MLB Hall of Fame inductions and I thought it would be good to see where the players would stand if us at CS.com were voting.
You can vote for upto 10 players but dont have to vote for any. If you dont think any are deserving please post and tell us you are voting, but not voting for anyone as that would count as a ballot as part of the 75% of the vote needed for enshrinement.
I am also going to add two names on here for us to consider... Both players are currently banned from being considered for enshrinement, but I am curious to how they would do. Below is the full ballot for 2010 with the two additional names at the end.
Bert Blyleven
Roberto Alomar
Jack Morris
Barry Larkin
Lee Smith
Edgar Martinez
Tim Raines
Mark McGwire
Alan Trammell
Fred McGriff
Don Mattingly
Dave Parker
Dale Murphy
Harold Baines
Carlos Baerga
Jeff Bagwell
Brett Boone
Kevin Brown
John Franco
Juan González
Marquis Grissom
Lenny Harris
Bobby Higginson
Charles Johnson
Al Leiter
Tino Martinez
Raúl Mondesí
John Olerud
Rafael Palmeiro
Kirk Rueter
Benito Santiago
B. J. Surhoff
Larry Walker
Pete Rose
"Shoeless" Joe Jackson
In one week I will tabulate the results.
If you prefer to have you ballot remain secret you can PM me the ballot.

Here's my 10, and my old-timers vote would go to Roger Maris. If Rose and Jackson were eligible, then they would replace 2 on the list.

I am too young to remember most of these guys during their prime, but I certainly hope that Edgar makes the HOF some year...if ever there was a DH that deserved to make it, it's Martinez.

I'd consider Jackson - but not Rose. A "lifetime ban" should be just that... a lifetime... Jackson is gone, and belongs in the Hall now... Rose can be admitted after he passes away, but not before.

Not a lot of names:
Roberto Alomar
Barry Larkin
Bert Blyleven
Sure Rose and Jackson should be in there, but that's not even much of a discussion - they clearly are HOF players being kept out for other reasons.

Question for those voting for Edgar Martinez. Just curious if you would vote for David Ortiz if he were on the ballot right now... How about if he played 3 more seasons while averaging 25 HR and 90 RBI?

He's got a few more years left before I put him in - right now he's in Cecil Fielder country.
Edgar defines excellence as a DH - he's the standard on which others are measured.

Doesn't Bagwell have the steroid taint also? Good to see the support for Cactus Jack, best pitcher in the 1980's.

A couple of flies in that ointment. It just doesn't hold water.TwinTownBisonFan wrote:I'd consider Jackson - but not Rose. A "lifetime ban" should be just that... a lifetime... Jackson is gone, and belongs in the Hall now... Rose can be admitted after he passes away, but not before.
First is that it was an ex post facto ruling. Second, the ban was for post-retirement conduct, which should not affect consideration for what he did as a player. Third, there's already precedent of re-instatement following lifetime bans in the case of at least one football and two baseball players. To apply that criteria to Rose, who was banned with bogus data to begin with, is ludicrous to the nth degree.

Whatchu talkin bout willis?
Rose was a player/manager and a manager... he gambled on the damn game, he admitted it - it's the biggest rule in the game, and it's posted in every clubhouse everywhere... He broke the biggest rule in the game. Jackson's ban was lifetime (was it ex-post-facto? sure! but so much was under landis... and it's long since over) he's dead now - his lifetime is over... time to let him in. Rose can join the hall after his death.
that's entirely intellectually consistent - you may not agree with the conclusion - but that's another matter entirely.

TTBF: How the cr@p can that be justified when there are OTHER guys who have already had "lifetime" bans reversed? What makes Rose different from them?

Re: MLB Hall Of Fame Ballot
guys who were reinstated:
Ray Fisher - banned for refusing to take a pay cut...
Dickie Kerr - banned for playing barnstorming games with Black Sox, not for gambling.
Fergie Jenkins - banned for getting busted with coke
Mantle and Mays - banned after retirement for working as casino greeters
Steve Howe - banned for drug problems
Not a single player has ever been reinstated after being banned for gambling on the game. period.

You can let Rose in the HOF without reinstating him.TwinTownBisonFan wrote:guys who were reinstated:

In fact, I believe that prior to Rose, there was no rule barring people from entering the HOF even if they were banned. The HOF changed their rules just for Pete's sake.
I can understand not allowing Rose to hold a coaching position, but keeping him out of the Hall it this point is unnecessary. Also, baseball allows Rose back for certain celebrations when a sponsor is will to pay. It's hard for me to go along with MLB's hardline stance when they are willing to bend the rules themselves as long as the price is right.

Re: MLB Hall Of Fame Ballot
That's exactly what I meant about the ex post facto thing. Realistically, even without this, Rose was going to the Hall as a player but was nowhere near qualifying as a manager. Let him in the Hall. Heck, even reinstate him. That Pearl Harbor job Gray put on him was uncalled for. But given his prior managerial performance, even if he IS fully reinstated, I highly doubt anyone's going to employ Rose as a manager.BlueHen86 wrote:You can let Rose in the HOF without reinstating him.

Your statement about MLB bending the rules reminds me to a great degree of the NCAA. They let a UCONN chick have a video blog for CBS during the tournament, but wouldn't let a Northwestern football player take a bit part in a movie with no lines for which the only compensation would have been transportation to and from the set.
