Cliff Lee: No One Spit At My Wife
So the whole story about his wife being spit at was false, Lee said at his press conference Wednesday.

Well what she said exactly was that no one spit at her because they knew exactly who she was. They knew she was a Rangers wife - not Mrs. Cliff Lee - and she did get spit on. Nice twist of words.JoltinJoe wrote:So the whole story about his wife being spit at was false, Lee said at his press conference Wednesday.

And they were spitting at her section, which was primarily a visiting section. But if it's a section of people and not a particular individual, then it's cool.

So are you apologizing for feeding into this fabrication by saying that it was Philly fans dressed up as Yankee fans who were doing the spitting? Shame on you, Joe, but we forgive you.JoltinJoe wrote:So the whole story about his wife being spit at was false, Lee said at his press conference Wednesday.

Well, I saw the press conference and the only thing I heard her say was that fans were taunting her and the other players' wives.bluehenbillk wrote:Well what she said exactly was that no one spit at her because they knew exactly who she was. I'm not sure what you that "no one spit at her" but in your next sentence saying she did get spit on. All I know is that is not what she said. And Cliff Lee himself said nothing other than she was taunted. This is from a Delaware O-Lin blog:
Turns out, that whole story about fans spitting on his wife never really happened.
“That was way overblown,” Lee said. “No one came up to my wife and spit on her. You go to any stadium, fans start cheering, especially in the post‑season, fans are going to say something, they’re going to do things like that. That story was way overblown, it was false, and had zero to do with anything.”
So it wasn’t hard feelings that kept Lee out of New York. It was his strong feeling for Philadelphia that brought him back. (Oh, and $120 million.)

I've always doubted this spitting thing because the area of the stadium where the players' wives sit is right in the middle of an expensive luxury seating area, and principally the people who sit there are corporate reps and their clients. Not really a spitting crowd. I saw the blogging on this story and there never seemed to be a source, and Mrs. Lee's statements were ambiguous claims about being made to feel uncomfortable.

That's section 39 of the old stadium -- home of the "Bleacher Creatures." It was a concentrated area of the stadium where the fans acted like the entirety of Fenway Park. Yes, it's true. A small percentage of Yankee fans can behave like Boston fans.andy7171 wrote:I counted about 3 females in that crowd. JJ you bring your kids to that BS?
The Yankees pretty much managed to do away with this group in the new stadium -- by design -- in the manner they assigned bleacher seating.

"Kristen Lee understands the perception. Given the reports, you might think she was a target of Yankees fans during the American League Championship Series and that might be the reason the Lees did not take all that New York money.
She explained back in October that there were some taunts and obscenities directed toward the Rangers family section in Yankee Stadium. There was some spit that rained down from above."
"Those incidents did happen," Kristen said yesterday after her husband Cliff was introduced as a Phillie for the second time. "But they weren't directed towards me. No one knew who I was. It was just fans being fans."

Don't you hate it when you have to take a couple seconds out of your day to correct a Yankee fan that still obviously can't get over the fact that his rotation for '10 looks like this: CC-Burnett-Hughes-Anova-MitreUNHWildCats wrote:now now bluehen... let's not let truth get in the way of Joe's dilusions to make out Yankee fans to be angels while vilifying Red Sox and Phillies fans.bluehenbillk wrote:Joltin Joe - From the horses mouth for ya:

Re: Cliff Lee: No One Spit At My Wife
Actually this is a great example of how an ambiguous comment by Mrs. Lee is used to "confirm" spitting.bluehenbillk wrote:Don't you hate it when you have to take a couple seconds out of your day to correct a Yankee fan that still obviously can't get over the fact that his rotation for '10 looks like this: CC-Burnett-Hughes-Anova-MitreUNHWildCats wrote: now now bluehen... let's not let truth get in the way of Joe's dilusions to make out Yankee fans to be angels while vilifying Red Sox and Phillies fans.
What things "did happen?" The writer says "spit from above" and then he quotes Mrs. Lee as "these things did happen."
Having watched the press conference, I can tell you that her that "these things did happen" was not in response to a question about spitting. It was about being taunted.
You can scour the internet and you will not find one quotation from Mrs. Lee in which she actually says that she was spit at or her section was spit at.
Incidentally, here is the USA Today story which first made the "spitting" charge that went all over the internet. Notice that Mrs. Lee only says that people stared at her and said things. The cups of beer and spitting charges are in the text, but not attributed to a source and the suggestion is that Mrs. Lee said it. But I heard with my own ears yesterday that both she and her husband denied she was spit at:

Re: Cliff Lee: No One Spit At My Wife
Yes, JJ, you are correct if you want to twist it that way, that the Lee's have never said that any person in Yankee Stadium ever intentionally spit on Cliff Lee's wife nor did they do it b/c they knew that she was Cliff Lee's wife. So in that sense yes, you are correct.
However, did Cliff Lee's wife get hit with spit in Yankee Stadium? Yes, that's also correct.
Twist it however you want, Cliff Lee is a Phillie, and part of the best rotation the game has seen in quite a while, and all the Yankee money in the world couldn't change that. Hock up a lugie to that one...

I wish all cases were so easy. The party-in-interest says the accusations are false, and yet some people continue to insist that the accusations are true. Damn, give me those facts every time.
