There is a reason the Continental Congress met in Philly. We knew the British would never want to go near it.93henfan wrote:Must not have read the Queenan article yet (and that was written before the Giants got their anal probe yesterday).JoltinJoe wrote:

Actually, that's not true. Those Brits who hadn't been mugged in NY couldn't find a cab to take them to PHL.JoltinJoe wrote:There is a reason the Continental Congress met in Philly. We knew the British would never want to go near it.93henfan wrote:

"1777
On September 26, the British proudly marched into Philadelphia.
In anticipation of their arrival, the capital was abandoned by the Patriots and many in the business community. (they went to New England I think
Things were in turmoil until the forts held by the Patriots were taken by the British and a steady supply of food and equipment flowed into the city.
They were ready to fully settle in for a warm, cozy, and party-filled winter.
When the French Alliance was announced, the occupying British feared an attack from the French armada and quickly abandoned the city, leaving the Tories unprotected and frightened."
At that time in history Philadelphia was the "it" place. NYC wasn't much more than a mudhole at the time.

Yes, it's true. We kicked the Brits' asses in NY. But Philly was taken without a fight.Ivytalk wrote:Actually, that's not true. Those Brits who hadn't been mugged in NY couldn't find a cab to take them to PHL.JoltinJoe wrote:

Kicked the Brits asses? The Brits rolled over NYC in a rout, driving Washington back to Philly, where he found his mojo and went up to Trenton, crossed the Delaware River and kicked their asses. That's why Trenton roots for Philly teams to this day.
The Brits held NYC until wars end. NYC was their base of operations, for chrisakes.

When you a championship starved town, I guess you get all excited about winning a regular-season hockey game; winning a regular-season football game, and signing a free agent. Big deal.93henfan wrote:BRILLIANT!CatMom wrote:
BTW, the Phils didn't make the WS this year and it wasn't because of a lack of starting pitching. They've done nothing to address the reason why the failed to make the WS. In fact, the Phils have become noticeably worse in that area -- with the loss of Werth. Reminds me a lot of the Braves of the 90s. They paid out to starting pitching, but let the bullpen and offense slip. By the time the '99 series came around, the only guy in the lineup who was really worth worrying about was Chipper Jones.
You heard it here first.

You heard it here first.Joe, you need to just STFU and take it like a man.
Last time I checked in the "what really matters" department, the Yankees beat the Phils in the World Series; and the Giants have won three Super Bowls to zilch for the Eagles; the Phillies have won two WS titles EVER; and the Eagles have no NFL titles since 1960. The Giants have a Super Bowl win in the recent past too.
And the Phillies' offense is going down hill fast. Utley's injury plagued and his productivity is suffering; Rollins is done; Howard can't hit a good pitcher anymore (and is signed through 2015
In the '99 World Series, the Braves scored 9 runs in four games -- and five of them came in one game. Take a look at the Braves of the 90s, because that's what the Phils look like.
The Phils have a small window of opportunity ...

One thing we're missing in this debate over whether the Eagles are legit or Jackson taunted the Giants is that Eagles WR Jason Avant was knocked out and concussed on that play. Yikes!

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

When it's for the division lead, against a division rival and could lead to a potential first round bye in the playoffs....

One day, when Yogi was managing the Mets, a reporter asked him about a young player who had been a hot prospect but who had not come close to living up to his claimed potential.
Yogi just shrugged and summed up his thoughts thusly: "The future ain't what it used to be."
And another Yogism was born.
