UConn on the Hook for $2.6M

Post by Col Hogan »

Right now, that's what it will cost UConn to play in the Fiesta Bowl...

Seems they have only sold 4500 of their 17,500 tickets...and the school has to pay for all of them...at $200 a pop...

UConn will receive about $3m for playing in the bowl...but it has to pay for hotels, food & travel as well as a big bonus for HC Randy Edsall...

And while it will be argued that the publicity will benefit the school and program...it is not the money maker some argue the FBS is...

Why's that? Can you seriously blame UConn for moving to I-A? Would you have turned down a new stadium built by the state and a spot in the Big East to have all your sports in one place? Now, if you want to laugh at Arkansas State, Troy, FIU, etc... that's understandable.

No, not laughing in particular at UConn - there move made sense. If the State of Arizona built NAU a stadium, and the Pac-12 offered NAU a spot, I'd take that in a minute.

More laughing at the idiots in the BCS that give the Big East a guaranteed spot, as well as the selection process that put them in the Fiesta Bowl, and Stanford in the Orange Bowl.

Good. Stick it to 'em. And take it out of Auriemma's pocket while you're at it.

You didn't REALLY think UOP was going to beat them, did you?

Yes, I did.

Between the long road trip, an unfamiliar arena, the fact that the law of averages says they're due, and plain myopianism, I really did think UOP was going to win.

What does an unfamiliar arena and a long road trip have to do with anything? And what's this "law of averages" of which you speak?

Unfamiliar arenae can cause confusion, especially when the crowd is into it. Just ask teams playing the Seahawks. Long road trips lead to fatigue, which perhaps explains the first 13 minutes of the game. The law of averages says that things have to end at some point.

Of course, the major thrust of my belief that UCONN would lose was my myopianism. I'm at least willing to admit that, even while being p!$$ed at their blatant running up of the score. The freaking starters were in until the end of the game.

The teams that make money off of the bowls are the BCS conference teams that don't go to a bowl.

The BCS bowls pay well, but I think much of that money is shared with conference mates, meanwhile the schools that play in bowls are on the hook for tickets and other expenses.

Get your a** kicked on national TV, further lend credence to the decline of your football conference, and give Oklahoma their first BCS bowl win since the 2002-2003 season. And for the low price of 2,600 grand!

Seriously, why did they even bother showing up for this game?

This game would've been good if they put Boise State in it instead of UConn. I think OU and BSU were close in abilities this season, and it could've made for an interesting rematch in this Fiesta Bowl between the two.

But nope...the BCS cartel can't allow that.

People may want to criticize the BCS, but as time has passed it has been innovative in terms of creating a criteria for including/excluding teams. I think they should probably make a rule excluding teams that win autobid conference championships and are not ranked. You could say that would diminish the value of conference championships but I think it would improve the value of the BCS

Your answer doesn't really make sense if they won those games they'd be in the same place they're in now.

I do agree UCONN didn't deserve to go but they did what they had to do which was win the Big East. Everybody knew that at the start of the season. And everybody knew due to the way the BCS was set up Boise, TCU, or anybody else couldn't lose. Is that fair? No it's not.

It's the same as being an auto qualifier in a playoff/tourney win your league and you're in. No matter how shitty your team is. That's how you end up with 6-5 teams in the playoffs. Do they deserve to go? No they don't but it is what it is.

That point won't be needed once TCU starts winning the Big East (provided they keep rolling which I think they will). Because most years every other AQ champ will be ranked (and I know FSU will be ranked and deserving every year they win the ACC ). And with TCU/Boise fighting for the MWC next year that reduces the number of BCS busters (provided they both have great seasons)

quite frankly I don't see any team form a non-AQ conference outside of a team from the Mountain West making a BCS bowl anymore. Conference USA fields a few good teams every year with potential but they are never consistent, heck I wouldn't be surprised if some of the decent teams that CUSA has get picked up by the Big East eventually (think UCF and possibly Houston and maybe, though unlikely, SMU now that Texas is in the Big East Domain). The WAC is pretty much dead and the MAC and the Sunbelt are basically FCS conferences, because they are clearly smaller and slower than any other conference.

I agree, the list of capable teams wasn't that long to begin with. Houston always loses a game they shouldn't, SMU is still a work in progress, UCF is starting to turn the corner, Fresno St (although the play a good schedule) can never win the WAC or beat Boise, Nevada has big holes to fill.

UCF would fit well in the Big East (great facilities and great support). Maybe with Leavitt gone from USF the war on I-4 can be revived.
