Bloomberg Demotes Head Of EMS
The head of the New York Emergency Medical Services has been demoted in the aftermath of the blizzard in December.
Bloomberg cited the slow response and large backlog of 911 calls when he announced the demotion.
In the days after the blizzard when hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers remained stranded Bloomberg in response to ambulances being stuck around the city said Emergency responders shouldn't be trying to navigate unplowed streets.
The wrong person is being punished. Chief John Peruggia and his people did their best to respond to calls. The real blame here should be placed upon the Sanitation Department who purposely slowed their work and avoided hundreds of streets in a salary dispute with the city.

Re: Bloomberg Demotes Head Of EMS
From what I heard when the deal first came out, I would agree with you. There are only so many people available for EMS duty, which can be arduous at times. If a squad is out on one call, it's not as if they can abort and go somewhere else. In addition, unlike a stationary place like a hospital, you really can't call in the off shifts because there's only so much equipment to go around. If they were held up by sanitation intransigence, I fail to see how EMS can be held at fault.

Didn't you hear? The sanitation department was just trying to save despondent jumpers:

Without knowing the background of this story, but having a lot of experience with emergency services, I would say this looks like a scapegoat.
I don't think EMS anywhere is well equipped to get around in a blizzard. The roads need to be cleared.

yes, and they sure as hell were trying and it resulted in several ambulances getting stuck in the snow... and the mayors response during the storm was that emergency vehicles (police, fire and ambulance) shouldnt try going down unplowed streets...CID1990 wrote:Without knowing the background of this story, but having a lot of experience with emergency services, I would say this looks like a scapegoat.

During his press conference today talking about preparation for the storm coming tomorrow he talked about the EMS guy being re assigned... and he was getting very testy once he opened up for questions... I hope the media keeps pressing him cause we could see a complete meltdown on tv

Blizzards are a clusterfuck... especially in huge cities. There's no one person or entity responsible for slow cleanup... it's just the way it is.

Video Shows NYC Sanitation Workers Blatantly Wasting Time, Not Removing Snow
The Business Insider ^ | 1/4/11 | Gus Lubin
The now-criminal investigation of NYC sanitation workers for allegedly delaying slowing snow removal is picking up steam.
A video obtained by CBS-2 shows snowplows driving through Queens on the night of the blizzard with plows raised. Other pictures and reports show workers napping on the job, drinking beer, and spending 11 hours at a Dunkin Donuts.
All of this evidence has been submitted to prosecutors who are looking into criminal wrongdoing. We're waiting for someone to get fired.

Would that have the plows down on the ground by the guys that were apparently not doing their jobs? Would it have been necessary if the guys that were supposed to doing their jobs were doing them?UNHWildCats wrote:bloomberg should have declared a snow emergencySkjellyfetti wrote:

Seems like you're trying to lay all the blame where it may not belong still.

well the snow emergency would have helped on this street. Clearly the biggest reason for the mess was the sanitation workers not doing their jobs because of the pay dispute stuff. But there were areas where streets were unpassable by plows.Ursus A. Horribilis wrote:Would that have the plows down on the ground by the guys that were apparently not doing their jobs? Re: Bloomberg Demotes Head Of EMS
Bloomberg should just place the blame squarely on Bush where it belongs and all these PR problems will go away.
