There is various types of stem cell research...the only type opposed by Bush was embryonic stem cell research...all others were and still are supported...

Then why didn't he pass a ban on in vitro fertilization, in which leftover embryos are often discarded?Col Hogan wrote:There is various types of stem cell research...the only type opposed by Bush was embryonic stem cell research...all others were and still are supported...

Yes. I think the private sector should really research ways to make mon...er, I mean....improve the quality of life for the populace. Federal funding of this reseach....ehhh ----> no.....

I would much rather see the space program go private than stem cell research. We don't want that getting in to the hands of those money sucking leeches.

I don't see anything wrong with it at all.

Ask him what his favorite candy bar is too, my bet is he likes baby ruth's

Re: Stem Cell Research?
As it stands right now... no government funding is used on embryonic stem cell research. Private companies or groups are allowed to do this though without funding. This is what UConn has done by privately funding the building of an off campus building that has no affiliation with the university and receives no money from the university either. It is completely funded by private dollars. Is it right ethically? Depends on the scientist you ask... but what has been done with stem cells that aren't embryonic is amazing. They've actually take a pluripotent, multipotent and even fully differntiated skin cells and have reverted them to a omnipotent stem cell. Omnipotent cells can form anything in the body while pluripotent and multipotent can only differentiate into certain things they are designed for.... as for the skin cells, that was just fucking cool. To take a cell that has a function in the body and revert it back to embryonic stages. Sorry for the science lesson... but that's what I am. With that, if those reverted skin cells prove to be functional and viable, then there really is no ethical dilema. That makes the impact of this research even greater. If you could take your own cells, revert them to embryonic stages, then hypothetically you could have an organ, ear, nerves, etc designed from your own cells which means no chance of rejection by your body.

Yup... I'm a scientist... this topic gets talked about a lot usually with the Kanye West premise that Bush doesn't care about science. I try not to speak politically or on serious subjects unless I got some decent understanding of what's going on... thought I'd enlighten the low brow crowd (including myself) that post here.

The problem with science is not that is not cared about, but that it is so misunderstood. What are you getting your masters in DJ?

Re: Stem Cell Research?
Misunderstood is the key word there... they're trying to put a Bioterrorism lab here in Athens, everyone who doesn't understand thinks they're going to release ebola into the rivers... I liken it to Nuclear power... everyone wants clean, efficient power... Just not in their back yard. That lab would be one of the safest and most heavily guarded facilities in the nation... doesn't matter though.wideright82 wrote:JMU DJ wrote:

Alright, do you agree with his position that embryonic stem cell research shouldn't be federally funded? Do you think that it should be allowed at all?Col Hogan wrote:I think I'll be talking to him later today...I'll ask...WTAG wrote: Then why didn't he pass a ban on in vitro fertilization, in which leftover embryos are often discarded?![]()

Where does stem cell research stand in the link begging for a bailout? Probably in front of the CEO's and bankers, but behind the labor unions running the auto industry.Appaholic wrote:I realize I live in fantasy world, but I would like all that sh!t to go private....yet, we are effectively nationalizing the banks and auto industry....apparantly, I'm in the minority...wideright82 wrote:

I don't think even Jorge Bush had a problem with privately funded research.WTAG wrote:Alright, do you agree with his position that embryonic stem cell research shouldn't be federally funded?
