Frisco Report Card
The town: C
The tailgating: B
Pre-game festivities: C+
The stadium: B+
Evidently the city of Frisco hasn't yet had time to create a traffic planning department. The streets made absolutely no sense whatsoever. You'd have 8 lanes of two way traffic on an arterial and an adjacent two-lane one way thrown in just for kicks. We had a Garminn GPS and a Tom Tom, both of which frequently contradicted, and we still had trouble finding things.
Also, Frisco is located in a semi-dry county so bars close at midnight, and you have to drive to neighboring Plano to find a liquor store.
It's mostly a very new town and the area where many of the Hotels (Aloft, Embassy, etc) are located is very suburban and full of cookie cutter chain restaurants and bars. The area around the stadium is also new (I believe) but seemed to have more interesting establishments and a more unique feel.
The FCS Chamnpionship logo'd room keys and some signage improved the grades a little, and the stadium was excellent except for the no re-entry policy.
Any other thoughts?

I think it was an improvement over Chatty with the potential to be far better once first-year kinks are addressed.
Hopefully some of you got out of Frisco. We were staying down in the Addison/Restaurant Row section of North Dallas and it was a very good time. Never ate better in my life.

We tried, but I'm tellin' yeah it was like the goddamm Bermuda Triangle where all navigational equipment ceases to operate, and you eventually realize your trapped in a whirlpool of traffic that's slowly funneling you back to the middle.93henfan wrote:I buried this in the photo thread:

The game should be moved to Carbondale. New stadium, centrally located in the nation, great bars, wineries, music, poon, and Mexican food.

They should just move the sucker to Missoula. I mean, that's where all the participants and winners are from, why make them travel?

After talking to both you and 93hen within minutes of each other I could tell that 93 has done it before or at least had done some more preparation for the party.kalm wrote:We tried, but I'm tellin' yeah it was like the goddamm Bermuda Triangle where all navigational equipment ceases to operate, and you eventually realize your trapped in a whirlpool of traffic that's slowly funneling you back to the middle.93henfan wrote:I buried this in the photo thread:

Your first trip to one of these deals is usually a learning experience. I'm not even talking about the layout of the town necessarily but more the way you float around the event for the good times.
I don't think Chatty has ever allowed you re-entry either so that is the same on that level. I don't like the dry county aspect of the discussion at fucking all though. We would always just get a cabbie to take us to a hardware store and buy one of those large totes and fill it with beer, ice, and several hard liquors so I guess you'd be OK as far as that goes but closing the party early when it's rolling really sucks a dick.

Part of the challenge is who you're travelling with and the limitations as such. For example, you can research all you want ahead of time, but we had to catch an early flight out of Spokane on Thursday morning to accomodate work schedules and didn't get to the hotel until about 5:00 Dallas time. That leaves you very little time for on-the-ground recon and adjustments. And this trip also involved catching up with a buddy from Phoenix who I don't get to see very often so where we ended up going was less important than catching up.
And 93 had a DD which is an asset and enabled him to stay in a better place further away from the stadium. We didn't and it encouraged us to strike out on foot Thursday night placing us at the mercy of what was local, and cab it back to the Hotel after the game.
So if I do it again, I will arrive two days before the game (even if I have to be an advance party), I will rent the car because if I'm the one driving there's less chance of getting lost (or bring a capable DD), and I will choose the lodging that's either right at the stadium or similar to where 93 stayed.
Oh, and I will have my itinerary approved by Ursus in advance in case I've fucked anything up.

Re: Frisco Report Card
You nailed the key points already and learned the way I did. The first time me and three buddies went to Chatty we were on the fringes of town in a shit little motel with the dregs all around us. We even ha a Wafflehouse within a block so that let's ya know how bad we fucked up.kalm wrote:Very true.Ursus A. We were getting on this highway and that highway to get back near the stadium. That happened the one time. The next time we were in the area where the game and all the nightlife was and could walk to all we needed.
It's a learning experience for sure and that probably has a little to do with the enjoyment of the trip and the venue. Send that itinerary anyway and I'll correct it for ya.

Re: Frisco Report Card
Yes Frisco had some issues but I thought they did pretty well.
Positives: Logistically it wa easy to get to once you were in DFW- the tailgating was VERY good and the Tailgate Town activities were cool for people of any age.
The stadium was nice, good sightlines and the will call situation was very smooth. Easy in and out (once Biden left).
Negatives: Just two really and should be easy fixes - PA needs more volume, and how do concessions run out of food at the beginning of halftime? The menu was fine but you need real food other than nachos.
Wasn't aware of the 12 midnight alcohol cutoff as we stayed in Plano - that just encourages people to stay in the lots and booze.

Re: Frisco Report Card
In my opinion, Frisco's location has it all over Chatty. I'd rather spend six hours flying (3 each way) versus twenty plus hours driving through mountains in Dec/Jan or the hassle of the prices and connections associated with a connector city (or Atlanta plus a four hour round trip drive). On the way down in '03 we passed through a snowstorm in Virginia that was near whiteout on the peaks along I-81. It would clear every time we dropped to a certain elevation then start back up as we climbed. On the way back, I took an offramp off I-40 in Knoxville and to my horror realized I had transitioned at about 50 mph from a perfectly clear interstate to a sheet of ice on the ramp that hadn't been treated. I slid down the ramp and through a red light at the bottom, with luckily no one passing by on the cross street. While we were eating I related the story to the waitress who said something like "yeah honey, we don't really put much salt on the roads around heeyah."
Frisco was so easy and the fares were so reasonable it was a real winner for me anyway. Nonstop flights, two nights at a very nice hotel, and three days rental car for $350/person was sweet. Plus there was so much that the Dallas/Ft Worth metroplex had to offer that if I do it again I'll probably add a day or two on to the trip and maybe take a day trip or overnighter down to Austin. I'd only ever been through Texas on I-40 through Amarillo (shithole) and I really liked Dallas. It changed my opinion of Texas somewhat.
