Best Conference in College Athletics?

Post by ToTheLeft »

I've seen it come up a couple places and wanted to have the discussion.

What's the best conference in college athletics? Considering all sports, but giving priority to those in the "spotlight".

I would say the ACC would be up there. Basketball is blessed to have 2 of the best "franchises" in the game, football isn't bad, baseball is solid, and Olympic sports aren't too shabby.

I love the SEC for football, but I don't think overall they're as solid, although I can see a case being made due to their football dominance, and being solid in baseball.

The Pac-10/12 gets a nod for it's performances in the "other sports". Seems like every time I look there's a Stanford or Cal winning a sport-I-never-watch National Title, which while boring to me, doesn't mean that school or conference isn't being represented well.

Thoughts? Opinions? Didn't wanna make this a poll, wanted it to be open discussion.

It's hard to argue against the ACC or the Pac-10 they both had 8 national titles in 2010.

I'll come up with an answer later today. For D-I, just looking through the guys, the Big XII, the Big 10, and the ACC seem about equal. The problem is factoring in sports with odd conferencing.

I don't believe in limiting it to D-I, though. I'll work on it this afternoon and come up with an answer.

Pac 10 - 392 Titles since 1959 or 7.7 Titles per year
Big 10 - 251 Titles since 1896 or 2.2 Titles per year
SEC - 162 Titles since 1933 or 2.1 Titles per year
ACC - 88 Titles sing 1955 or 1.4 Titles per year

"Big" time sports:

Football - SEC most BCS championships ... IVY most recognized championships followed by Big10 then SEC
Basketball -Pac 10 most championships = 13 (ACC 12, Big 10/Big East/SEC all have 10)
Baseball - Pac 10 most championships followed by SEC

... I think even if you discount the "fluff" sports, the Pac10 still has a pretty dominant history and recent history.

Yeah, as JMU DJ listed there the Pac-10 is far and away the best conference if you consider all sports. It isn't "The Conference of Champions" for nothing. Giving priority to the spotlight sports it's probably close amongst the Big 10, SEC and Pac-10.

Ah, I didn't see the updated list of this year's Director's Cup Standings. Yeah, this year there isn't much of a difference between the Pac-10 and ACC, I was speaking more from a historical perspective.
