The presidential election a beauty contest and the general public can't deal with an honest, strait shooter. I would say he's too conservative to be elected, but look at the Liberal in the office now.

looking at the GOP field - it has the feel of the Dems 04 field...

the hardcore base is going to want someone like Palin or Bachmann... (think Howard Dean) who will undoubtedly gaffe horribly before they can get to the nomination... and they seem likely to resort to a milquetoast alternative (think Kerry) - this bodes well for Pawlenty who is about as interesting and charismatic as bologna on white bread with mayonnaise.

I've generally given Romney my own personal nod for the nomination. I wish he had gotten it instead of McCain in the last election.

I am not concerned about religion or the other goofy things that people are going to play 'gotcha' with when it comes to Romney. It's the economy, stupid, and Romney has better economic chops than anyone currently in the field, left or right.

But are those chops cut on the way things were before the great recession?

You tell me-

Anyone with half an economic brain knows what was wrong with the pre-recession economy. (Not by hindsight, either)

In a nutshell why Romney won't ever be President, or even seriously evaluated to be one - pure and simple bigotry of Mormons. He may not be the right man for the job, but most will never get past bigoted ideas like the above to even consider him on his merits, or lack thereof. :ohno:
Most got far enough past their bigoted ideas to elect a Catholic, not to mention a Negro, on merit.

trouble for romney is that for a Repub to win, they need the evangelical Christians... not a lot of love for Mormons among evangelicals - who don't consider them Christians - and that's at it's most polite...

I'm not entirely sure the evangelicals carry that much clout. They are definitely vocal, but I think their ability to sway nominations is more dependent on the intimidation and wild gesticulating factor, and less on their actual percentage of the demographic.

But then, I have no real facts to back that up, it is just the way I feel, in a inside-my-own-little-world Houndawg kind of way.

by numbers, evangelical Christians make up the largest single bloc in the GOP. they are by no means a majority in their own right, but they do tend to be VERY influential, especially in the internal party dynamic. look at how much energy Bush spent courting them in 2000, and making sure they'd stay with him and turn out to vote in 04...

No, and the locals also do not call it Ho Chi Minh City, they call it Saigon.

Only high party officials and Houndawg call it HCMC. Coincidence?

And... the local used to call me Ngườươi Tây, but now they call me Ông Lãnh Sư. And the women call me Đẹp trái.

Sounds like you might be channeling one of your own experiences. COnsidering the beating you took on the last thread I'd say that's accurate, boy.

Huckabee's enmity represents only a tiny fraction of evangelicals. If Romney is the candidate against Obama, Romney with get the evangelical vote.

You shouldn't use Google translate, Native. It doesn't work properly in Vietnamese.
