Paying property tax isn't enough? It should be, imo.

Although the thought of one of the ruling class suddenly scrambling for a job is amusing.

Apparently the Illinois Supreme Court agrees with you. :ohno:

What TTBF is really trying to say is that Chicago insider power politics trumps everything. The actual laws are just window dressing.

Nonsense, nate, the position is like any other elected office in America: For sale to the highest bidder.

There are actually some places in small town and Midwest America where the rule of law trumps corruption.

Braun Falsely Claims Harvard Degrees
The Crimson ^ | Jan 19 | Sophie T. Bearman

Carol Moseley Braun, whose career includes a term in the U.S. Senate representing Illinois and a stint as U.S. ambassador to New Zealand, clearly has an impressive record of achievement behind her.

One accomplishment that she can't claim, however, is having graduated with a degree from Harvard. Be that as it may, Braun did just that in a radio interview on a Chicago radio station last Wednesday, but Eric Zorn of the Chicago Tribune quickly caught the glitch.

Braun has always been a joke... she was an empty suit Senator... and as a result got her ass handed to her in 1998... a good year for Dems... yet she lost to Peter Fitzgerald... not a compelling opponent... speaks to her appeal..

Well, I live in small town and Midwest America, and while we're not as sophisticated in our corruption don't think it isn't here. You don't hear about it as much because of the lack of national media in such areas.

What TTBF is really trying to say is that Chicago insider power politics trumps everything. The actual laws are just window dressing.
From what I know about the eligibility requirements the Illinois Supreme Court got this right. Whether a potential candidate is a resident isn't as simple as applying the Websters' definition. It has to do with whether the individual intends to make the city his residence long-term which Rahm apparently did because he did not sell his home and it was understood that he was in DC for the short-term.

Insider politics are a huge problem in Chicago but they were not a major factor here. If they were the Court would likely have ruled against Rahm since one of the judges is the wife of an Alderman is who is supporting Gerry Chico.

Her lack of appeal was a good thing in the long run. Senator Peter Fitzgerald was one the best things that happened to Illinois politics in a long time. It's too bad the Republican members of the Illinois combine chased him off. Unlike too many politicians, he represented his constituents with character and integrity.

I think both parties are run by the moderates. Today's moderate = corporatist.

Peter Fitzgerald was a true moderate. He was a wealthy man who used his wealth to insulate himself from the influence and corruption of others. You might not have agreed with how he voted on an issue but you could feel certain that he voted that way because he felt it was both best for his constituents and the right thing to do. He was pretty much marginalized in the Senate by the Republican elite but his legacy in Illinois is significant because he managed to bypass the elite and recommend that President Bush appoint Patrick Fitzgerald (no relation) as the top prosecutor in Northern Illinois. The Combine (Democrat & Republican) that runs Illinois fears Patrick Fitzgerald and he is making a dent in cleaning up the state.
