New Jordan Government: King Abdullah II Dismisses Government

AMMAN, Feb 1 (Reuters) - King Abdullah of Jordan, a close U.S. ally, on Tuesday replaced his prime minister after protests over food prices and poor living conditions, naming a former premier with a military background to head the government.

A Jordanian official said the monarch officially accepted the resignation of Samir Rifai, a wealthy politician and former court adviser, and asked Marouf Bakhit to form a new cabinet.

Demonstrators inspired by mass protests in Tunisia and Egypt had called for Rifai's dismissal.

The ratio of poor people to rich in those countries is way out of whack, even compared to our country...and their poor are MUCH worse off than our poor.

Reminds me of these two exchange students from Saudi that were living on the same floor as me in the dorms. These guys had a hard drive filled with porn by the middle of the first semester.

Reminds me of these two exchange students from Saudi that were living on the same floor as me in the dorms. These guys had a hard drive filled with porn by the middle of the first semester.

One thing you can count on…if it gets ugly, the rich will take care of themselves and get out – and they will take their money with them. The upper middle class will also. That will leave a small middle class and some idealists…hardly the type to stand up to some hard core psychos. The lower middle class will suddenly understand that change doesn’t come quickly…an entire infrastructure needs to be developed…and their dreams will confront a hard reality.

Unless some strong moderate comes to the front quickly, and has a plan to invigorate their economy at an unheard of pace, the radical Islamists, with their guarantees of virgins and the promised land, will have a field day.

The American press is zeroed in on the MB like they are the main element of these protests... they clearly aren't... a lot has been made that these guys spun off Hamas... which they did -25 years ago... an while there is no mistake that they are an Islamic party - they AREN'T Hamas... attempts to paint the opposition that way is pretty clearly coming from Mubarak and the regime, and it's intended audience is their patrons in the US... it's a gambit and a desperate one to hold power.
