eh... it's a gambit - but state tv in egypt (all that is on the air) is portraying the protesters as needlessly violent and as destabilizing forces - they are portraying Mubarak as willing to compromise... and in favor of security...

at the same time, they are cutting across that message with line suggesting foreign media and Israel are behind this... Al Jazeera's host described this as "the classic technique of the Israeli bogeyman" and implied that the average person in the Arab world knows that for what it is...

That AJ anchor was really pissing me off for a while the way she was interrupting all responses from those on the phone and so forth...then I got a look at her and decided to ease off my irritation.

She's real fuckable, so I now assume that she was only doing that because she needed to cut through the deluge of information and get to the important stuff.

Yeah, I liked how they predicted that Mubarek would be following Saddam's tacts and releasing criminals to increase the appearance of chaos and use them as Mubarek supporters also. It will be interesting to see if that is true because the early "man on the street" reports that Police and other members of the state government were the majority of the Mubarek attackers appears to be valid.

yes - to all of this.

it was annoying as shit - but that one dude who kept re-appearing wouldn't shut the hell up either...

got to be frustrating to have people yapping in your ear piece while you're trying to talk on air (i know it was like that on radio)

just in:

the obama white house appears to be working on a means for mubarak to step down Suielman to take over for a defined transition period... proposal would have the support of the military.

this could be a game changer.

TTBF, why is it that the Arabs want us to stay out of things and let it shake out and then once they are in trouble you get some of them putting out the "Where was Obama and why was he so late on this" shit?

It's not the reprters or the in the know guests so much as some of the reports from the street and I know they are in a desperate situation but you either do your work to get what you want or you don't.

It is not Obama's place to try and put someone in place or model their government for them. I think Obama did a pretty good job the way he has handled this so far but you can kind of see a common thread developing with some of the anti Mubarek crowd can't ya?

I can certainly understand their sentiment, given how many billions Mubarak's regime has received from us over the years.

That money went to the military and the military is well liked or at least respected by the masses. It was given to them to bolster their safety in a region that it is sorely needed and is for them.

The intent of that money has never been to bolster Mubarek's actions against his own people from what I can tell. The military would not be well respected if they had acted as Mubarek's henchmen either from what I get out of it.

As I said they are in a desperate situation but Obama has done what he can to stick his neck out so far as I can tell for them.

Look how much shit you get yourself into trying to change a government in Iraq that the people did not do on their own. You want the people to make this happen then help them when they do accomplish it to have the democratic style government where they can vote and have their voice.

It was not very many but there was some of that kind of "they should have done more earlier" type of thing.

honestly - this bit baffled me...

my take - much like our 24 hour networks - when they need to fill time they reach...

with no footage from the square for hours now... they're groping for content

al jazeera back live with video of Liberation Square... crowds already swelling - even before midday services at the Mosques for Friday prayers... the military has increased their presence - but at this point it sounds like the they are there to try and keep things peaceful and to protect the protesters...

Some really good pictures here.

Midday prayer just got over with and the crowds are massing. Shit's going down today.

in the last few hours - prayers came and went - and the crowd has more than doubled... watching the prayers and hearing the translation "our protest is not a Muslim protest, it is a protest for all Egyptians, stand with your Christian brothers for Egypt today"...

pretty amazing stuff

the shameful performance of the network media this morning is galling... three networks in morning shows and not a damn one of them talking about this remarkable protest... (i don't have access to cable news - and it's amazing how little i would know about this if it were up to them)

if you watch the morning shows you now know more about an ad with Ozzy Osborurne and Justin Bieber than a revolution in the largest Arab nation in the world... bravo American media   bravo.

Interesting...I turned on the TV for about 10 minutes this morning and all NBCwas talking about were the current protests. They usually provide traffic/weather updates every 30 seconds, but after 10 minutes I gave up.

i flipped between the big 3 for about an hour... the only mention of egypt was a blurb in the top of the hour news...

am i raging misogynist for noting what complete fluff and bullshit seemingly targeted at brain-dead housewives the morning news shows are? (maybe they've always been this way, and I just haven't noticed)

Meh, maybe it's because I live just outside DC so I am bombarded with this news all the time it seems, while you live in Canada.

It should be noted though...I turned on the TV at 6:30AM, when they actually show NEWS, and was out the door by 7AM. I only ever watch any of the 'morning shows' until about 8AM or so because that's when they definitely seem to target the brain-dead housewives.
