If you watch that and still object to gay marriage you are a complete and utter turd.

Re: The power of family
“I know that some may contend that since the Bible teaches that marriage is between a man and a woman, Maryland should continue to prohibit same sex marriage. First, let me state that I am a strong follower of Jesus Christ. I worked in youth ministries for many years. However, while my faith may teach that marriage is between a man and a woman, our government is not a theocracy. As the state senator from District 9, I represent everyone in my district, regardless of their faith. Therefore, while my spiritual life is extremely important to me, it cannot be the sole basis for my decisions as a state senator.” (emphasis mine)

It's a compelling speech and a lovely story with an obvious common sense conclusion...
but I assure you - it falls on deaf ears and closed minds

No doubt. 62 closed minds and dead ears as a matter of fact. The measure passed 62-37.Chizzang wrote:It's a compelling speech and a lovely story with an obvious common sense conclusion...

I'm not necessarily referring to this specific political event... however surprising it turned outGSUAlumniEagle wrote:No doubt. 62 closed minds and dead ears as a matter of fact. I'm referring to the entrenched positions this country has taken on this topic
Baby steps are nice to see... but there is nothing like wide spread acceptance - and it's political death if your cought voting Pro-Gay in about 1/2 the states in this country

Re: The power of family
any family can make a great family. As a young man however, I am thankful I did have a male figure around the house. My dad is the bomb and I do feel a young child can get a lot from a traditional family. I understand the other position, believe me I do. I just wonder what little Johnny has to do with 2 moms when he pops his first nut in the middle of the night? Think they can help him?
Again, no harm, although the leftists will certainly take it that way.

I think the argument would be that:catamount man wrote:any family can make a great family. As a young man however, I am thankful I did have a male figure around the house. a) In times of adversity in a child's life the idea that they absolutely must have someone who's gone through the same thing themselves is overrated. A woman can talk about male puberty issues just as clearly as a man. It's not the gender that the child needs, it's the care. I remember being five years old and getting "the talk" from my mother. I still knew what sex was.
b) Just because someone doesn't have a same gender parent in the home doesn't mean they don't have a same gender adult figure in their lives. Uncles, grandfathers, etc.
There are countless cases of single-parent children becoming successful in this world. If our concern was really the children, wouldn't we also outlaw a single parent from adopting? Of course not. The "fear" for the children is a straw house built solely to put fear into the hearts of the average Christian in order to instill in them that allowing homosexuals to marry would somehow make victims of us all.

Re: The power of family
We here in Wyoming are under siege it seems. There is such a threat from gay married couples getting married off in some liberal place, and then moving to Wyoming to dilute the sanctity of all our alcohol and meth soaked marriages.
So, even though there is an extrememly full slate of business to attend to during this years legislative session, we have had to address this impending assault by these gay couples.
The bill has passed the house and is awaiting Senate approval. One of the things that some liberal brought up was how the law would affect gay couples seeking divorce and child custody handling.

Wow! A very impressive speech by this young man.GSUAlumniEagle wrote:
This is a big deal in Iowa right now. It's been almost 2 years since the Iowa Supreme Court unanimously ruled in support of gay marriage. Iowa voters voted out 3 of the supreme court justices in last November's election. The election also switched us from a D senate, D house and D governor to a R house, R gov, and a much narrower majority D senate (26D - 24R). This hearing was in the House on a constitutional amendment which ended up passing 62 to 37. 3 Dems voted to approve the measure.
Fortunately it is very difficult to do a constitutional amendment in Iowa. Both the House and Senate have to pass it in either 2011 or 2012, then they both have to pass it again in 2013 or 2014, and then it would go to an election in 2015. If it doesn't pass in 2011 or 2012 it would have to pass both houses in 2013 or 2014, then again in 2015 or 2016, and then a vote in 2017. And the Democrat Senate majority leader has said he will not allow it to come to a vote in 2011 or 2012 so barring something unforeseen Iowans will not be voting on this anytime soon.
Mike Gronstal is the Democrat Senate Majority Leader. There is a good chance he will lose his next election over this. If you are big believer in this cause and have a few bucks to spare I would suggest that you consider sending some to his re-election campaign. And this suggestion is coming from a guy that doesn't agree with Gronstal on a lot of things but I think he deserves support just for his stand on this.
