MLBPA Abusing System?
StL manager Tony LaRussa is accusing the MLB players association of pressuring star Cardinal Albert Pujols to go for broke in his current contract negotiations. LaRussa says this is bad for the game. The MLBPA is naturally denying the allegaions. Pujols, a career-long Cardinal, is staying mum for the moment.

Re: MLBPA Abusing System?
Wasn't he the top-paid player in baseball at the time he signed? StL can't be held responsible for subsequent contracts. It's that kind of thinking that causes team chemistry/quality to go down; there's only so much $$ to go around, even in leagues w/no cap. That means the other players split less, so you get bad players than you would have had otherwise.

No one is forcing the Cards to sign him. If they don’t like his demands, they can find another 1st baseman. This is the beauty of capitalism SH.

he did them a solid - allowing them to sign others... he's the best player in the game right now... he was underpaid by a team he showed loyalty to... if i were in his shoes... i'd test the market. maybe only to re-sign...

2004: $7 million (Not among top 25 highest paid)
2005: $11 million (Not among top 25 highest paid)
2006: $14 million (17th highest)
2007: $15 million (11th highest)
2008: $16 million (10th highest)
2009: $16 million (17th highest)
2010: $16 million (22nd highest)
He will make $16 million in 2011 from a club option, he will once again not be among the top 25 highest paid players.

He wont come cheap. Anyone thinking Boston and NY wont be in on it because they are set at 1B are just being wishful. Pujols knows this too, thats why he's not going to take a penny less than being the highest paid... cause if St Louis wont pay it... someone will.TwinTownBisonFan wrote:No... he gave them a hometown discountSuperHornet wrote:Wasn't he the top-paid player in baseball at the time he signed? TTBF: You seriously believe that a team that's notorious for NOT paying top dollar in free agency is "leverage" for Pujols over the Cards?

Re: MLBPA Abusing System?
Did someone from the Cardinals hold a gun to his head and make him sign that deal 7 years ago? If his agent had a brain in his head, he'd have had him sign a 4-5 year deal, then he'd ahve been smack in the MIDDLE of his biggest production years, instead of on the 3rd year of a 3 year slide into oblivion.UNHWildCats wrote:Pujols signed a long 7 year deal tht left him underpaid.... its time for St Louis to pay up or shut up...
Pujols got $111 million over the past 7 years. If he isn't willing to sign a 4-5 year deal, I'd kindly tell him to go fuck himself. Neither the Red Sox nor the Yankmees need a first baseman, so he's really up shit creek without a paddle and with virtually no bargaining power.

keep in mind dimple... they have new owners. owners who are trying to get help upgrading wrigley... owners eager to prove they are serious about winning.
moreover - the dodgers should be emerging from their legal mess - and the Nationals and O's have been throwing money around of late as well.
and, as travis points out - having nowhere to put him won't stop the yankees or red sox from getting involved
the only big teams not involved will be the phillies (loaded with everything) and the mets (possibly in receivership by then)

Mets in receivership? They might be able to avoid that. Yahoo! is reporting that they're wooing The Apprentice King as an investor.

The NBA has a team being run down by casino owners. (Well, I exaggerate a bit. They were horrible before these owners came in. But they're still idiot enough to shut down a title-winning team while keeping a team that can't win.) You might have a point....

I wouldn't be srprised if the shrewdest GM in baseball right now, Mr. Ruebn Amaro, who has recently put together a string of blockbusters is involved. It went public last year that the Phils & Cards talked, however so briefly, about a Howard-Pujols blockbuster. Rumors going around this morning those talks could be re-occuring lately, with the Phils floating a 8-year, $224M (that's 28M per) deal out there to extend him.

Fine. Take that $30 mil a year and get 3 front-line players instead. The A-Fraud deal with the rangers proved that unless you're the Red Sox or Yankmees, a deal like Pujols is asking for is a TEAM killer.TwinTownBisonFan wrote:if i was his agent, i'd tell him to leave it.AZGrizFan wrote:

I'm not disagreeing with that idea - Karl Ravetch floated that notion yesterday... I'm saying from Pujols perspective... this is likely his last contract... this is it... you're the best player in the game, go for the bank.AZGrizFan wrote:Fine.
