Appalachian State to CUSA?

Post by guinzone »

This tweet seems to think it is final from today:
Rumors are that App State is going to move up to C-USA. From my sources it is a done deal already. App State will be C-USA within two years.

I really doubt it's final already. The committee has only met twice so far. They did just have their second meeting on Monday and since then there's been a lot of buzz about the likelihood of moving up. I hope it's true, though. Conference USA would be the best possible scenario for us, imo. I'm skeptical, though.

Collegesportsinfo.com is reporting it also. I think it has been decided for a while. Someone within ASU's athletic department told me a while back that the coaches complained to Charlie Cobb saying it would be much easier to tell recruits it is going to happen than wait. Then I read on a board where one recruit's father said ASU was telling his son that. I firmly believe it has been decided and ASU is gone. It just seems the formality of an announced invite from C-USA and the announced acceptance by ASU is all that is needed.

I agree with those reporting the rumors. I think it's happening. It's like I told someone in the media who asked me about it. ASU didn't have to spend all that money on those enhancements to stay where they are right now. They did need to do it to move up. The chancellor is a businessman. If he wasn't moving up I think they needed to make improvements but nowhere near the levels they made. It seems pretty clear cut ASU intends to go FBS. Just a matter of time before the announcement is made.

Why have no major sports news sources even hinted at this?

And what is happening in CUSA to make a spot for ASU, or are they expanding beyond 12?

Yeah, I think signs point to us wanting to move up as well. Just saying I don't think it's anywhere near final... especially that we're going to Conference USA.

C-USA might be looking ahead to the coming realignment...

if the Big East splits in half (as has been predicted) they could lose a few of their number - (think Memphis and maybe UAB or UCF) and need to acquire a new team or two.

Plus, there is no telling what the MWC or WAC may try to do to siphon off their western members (esp. UTEP and Houston)

Some one remind me how an announcement would impact ASU's playoff participation for their remaining period of time in FCS. Didn't the NCAA enact the "Marshall" rule after they won the NC in '96 or am I just dreaming it.

As I said before, thought for awhile it would happen. Hate to see it happen but if it does wish ASU and all my ASU friends best of luck.

I think the rule, as you noted with Marshall, is that once a college formally announces intent to move up, they forfeit their right to compete in the playoffs.

The site says this page doesn't exist. For some reason, this tweet has been removed. However, it is odd that the ASU/ CUSA talk is really heating up.

It is heating up. From what I have been able to gather is that ASU is just waiting to be formally invited because they will accept. But I think the talk is really heating up because it seems as though C-USA officials have told ASU that they will invite them as soon as they need/want to add another team and it is likely happening this year. I mean if ASU told recruits they would be FBS within a couple years it sounds like ASU is just waiting to have all of the meetings on the study finished so it doesn't appear that they have rushed things.

So, you think ASU will announce they're going FBS at the same time CUSA invites ASU? It will all be worked out before any announcement is made?

From what I'm hearing it seems a verbal agreement has happened. They are just waiting to have their I's dotted and T's crossed before they announce something. My guess is later this spring or this fall.

Not happening...

Not 'cause I actually know, but I'm done believing all these rumors until the ink dries. Remember last summer?

We should just do away with the divisions and make it all one like college basketball. The FBS is going to have 200 schools by the time we blink.

That would rock if we could get GSU jr. to move up in the next couple of years and get the real GSU to join the dark side. :thumb:

Wowowo, sllllow down. I didn't report "it" as in "it was happening". The article was just to acknowledge that there have been rumors. The title was actually "Conference Rumors", not "App St. to CUSA". I haven't heard anything factual about App St. yet. Had I, I would have mentioned it.

That's more of what I am speculating. Villanova has taken forever to decide on upgrading. And with all the time spent, it would seem said time would be used to help with rejecting an upgrade. With all the time spent, they can say that they did all the analysis and found it financially to be the wrong decision (it's a small camp right now that actually wants to upgrade, but the lure of potential $$$ after a huge initial investment).

And if Villanova passes, then UCF becomes the #1 candidate. And if you need a single replacement, your options are:
* WAC schools: LA Tech, NMSU, UTSA, Texas St. (none of which would keep ECU, Marshall and Memphis happy)
* Sunbelt schools: North Texas (likely the best candidate, but being in Texas, would not keep the eastern schools happy)
* Temple: perhaps
* App St.: an FCS upgrade, but a school that the eastern schools would want, a bridge for Marshall, ECU, and Memphis.

I dont' buy into the CUSA-16 scenario...just no money to go around.

Note that the Big East has said Memphis is not a candidate. There isn't as much mystery to Big East expansion now that TCU is a part of the puzzle. The rest is clear:

Scenario 1) Villanova upgrades for football #10, expansion done: Big East at 10/17 members
Scenario 2) Villanova rejects offer, and UCF is invited: Big East at 10/18 members

Long term:
Scenario 3) Big East opts to split: 10 football schools make new conference
Scenario 4a) Big East opts to split, and expands to 12 for a conference championship game:
Adds UCF and Houston (two confirmed candidates) for members #11 and #12
Scenario 4b) Big East split & expansion to 12: With UCF as member #10, Big East brings in Houston as #11 and Temple as #12. If the conference does not have Villanova, then they would likely want Temple to add some level of access to the Philly market. No Nova, means no veto to adding Temple. No Nova means Temple could easily become the big basketball fish in Philly since it would be Temple aligned with Syracuse, Uconn, Pitt, WVU, Louisville, etc

So with TCU added, it's much more clear cut. There's always room for a wildcard, like if Notre Dame joined the football side for non-football sports, then maybe ECU beats out Temple for a football-only spot. And maybe it's 10 years from now that a split even happens, which could mean a program like Buffalo might prosper, of FCS schools like Dealware, JMU, Charlotte, App St., UMass, etc could all have upgraded by then.

But if we're talking the next few years, it's practically all lined up:
Villanova or UCF for #10
If split with Villanova, then UCF and Houston for 11 and 12
If split without Villanova with UCF as #10, then Houston as #11, and likely Temple at #12 (of a wildcard for #12).

Exactly. So if App St. announced this week, then they'd transition in 2011 and would not be eligible for the playoffs. Depending on the timing, they might be able to be in CUSA for the 2012 season...may not be until 2013.

I'll believe it when it's official. I think most App fans would be pleased if CUSA offered. If it's the Sunbelch or MAC I would rather stay in the SoCon.

But, it looks like nothing formal will happen until later Spring or early Summer at the earliest, does that sound about right? I'm guessing if they announce any time before the start of the 2011 season ASU would ineligible for the playoffs?
