BAGHDAD (AP) — The Baghdad city government is demanding the United States pay $1 billion and apologize for damage to the city caused by blast walls erected during the nearly eight-year long war.
City officials filed a lawsuit in an Iraqi court against the U.S. military, a media official said Thursday. He did not want to be identified due to the sensitivity of the situation.

Talk about ungrateful b@$^@#%$!
One, they have no standing to bring suit. Two, nobody's got jurisdiction for a suit. Three, Thumper's right. This is VERY reminiscent of that wench who sued Mickey D's because her coffee was too hot.

Don't get me wrong, I think the lawsuit is BS, but I don't see why the Iraqi people should be grateful towards us.

Yeah, some will be grateful and others certainly won't be. I don't know the mix but acting like they should all be is a little bit of silly thinking. Hell even those that are/will be grateful for the omelet are not gonna be happy with the broken eggs.BlueHen86 wrote:Ungrateful? Really? I hope Baghdad collects EVERY penny. Small price to pay for an unconstitutional war that cost innocent lives of innocent Americans and Iraqis. I hope the Afghan govt/people do the same.

If someone dropped a bomb on your place of residence, killing your wife and kids (bear with me here), would you be grateful to them?SuperHornet wrote:Talk about ungrateful b@$^@#%$!

Sure there was some collateral damage. There ALWAYS is in war, even though nowadays we try to limit it as much as possible. Hence the presence of laser-guided bombs.BlueHen86 wrote:Ungrateful? Really? We invaded their country.SuperHornet wrote:Talk about ungrateful b@$^@#%$!

But they should be grateful because we took out one of the most despotic rulers of the 20th century, thereby making their lives better.

Re: Baghdad sues US for 1 billion
Maybe I'll get flak for this, but I did visit Iraq (Baghdad and Babylon specifically) when I was younger when lived in the Middle East, and it was a beautiful country with people that seemed fairly happy. Again I was young and a lot of trips are fun when you're a kid, but their lives looked fine. I mean, I know the dude killed a whole bunch of people but I'm specifically talking about the citizens of Baghdad. Obviously I haven't been there since the war so maybe they're still happy or even happier, but nothing in the media portrays that so I'm assuming Iraqi citizens don't really like a war in their midst.SuperHornet wrote:But they should be grateful because we took out one of the most despotic rulers of the 20th century, thereby making their lives better.

Give them a billion now and completely stop any future funding. They'll be the under Iranian rule within months.

They're suing the US military in an Iraqi court of law? Yea, frivolous lawsuit.

Re: Baghdad sues US for 1 billion
Even under a dictatorship, there are winners and losers. Plenty of people made out just fine under Hussein's rule - that's how dictators keep power. I'm sure they are plenty of those people who feel worse off now than then. Of course, there are also people who would've been dead under the past regime, so they might feel differently.∞∞∞ wrote:Maybe I'll get flak for this, but I did visit Iraq (Baghdad and Babylon specifically) when I was younger when lived in the Middle East, and it was a beautiful country with people that seemed fairly happy. Re: Baghdad sues US for 1 billion
The point is some may be grateful but there are a lot of them that are not and have no reason to be from their perspective. You may want to try and watch the documentaries Restrepo and the new one on Marjah from HBO. It is very clear that in spite of our efforts and our trying to be careful about civilian casualties they do not see us any better or worse than the Taliban. In reality they don't see it the way YOU see it as American citizens. That's pretty important. We ought to start dealing with reality and not what we wish reality were. I know that nothing in your life is set up that way but it's a fact that needs to be taken into account anyway.SuperHornet wrote:Sure there was some collateral damage. What I want to know is when that Iraqi oil is going to pay for the invasion like we were told it would.
