Where do you think Fed funds come from? As a taxpayer, do I get to look at a breakdown of how my income tax dollars are used and decide which funds I don't agree with and then deduct from my witholding? It comes as no shock that as a dem operative, you don't see the connection between income taxes & federal funding..

apples and pears dude

a more apt analogy would be you refusing to buy an energy-efficient refrigerator and collecting the tax break for doing so. the government has set up both for taxpayers and other government entities, incentive programs to do the right thing (whether you agree they are the right thing is a different argument)... refusing to partake in them is your prerogative, but that's what the funds (or tax breaks as it were) are there for

Bullshit. You want money for your teacher's salaries, your books, new computers, basically stay open.... you're gonna have to live with a couple rules. What do school lunches have to do with this? What if the gov said every day you must sing a song about the joys of the Commander in Chief if you wanted your money?

So it's OK for the feds to withold monies unrelated to school lunches (textbooks, etc) to prove a point about nutrition?

Bingo! It's monies collected by the feds on behalf of the taxpayers to fund taxpayer services. However, it's been converted into a means to promote a specific agenda by members of both parties when in power.

converted??? shit...

every administration since Washington has used the power of financial incentives to coerce the states and municipalities to set their priorities in line with their own... nothing new (or even really wrong) about that.

It's still an incentive. I mean... :sarcasm: c'mon, you can't be fiscally responsible enough to run your district without
federal money? :sarcasm:

the school lunch program really isn't any different from the rest of education funding. it's all tied to the same basic thing - we set standards and goals for the development of our kids, and we have various ways of promoting that... given the problem with childhood obesity, it's not surprising that such a step was taken. (and, before you say it... no, i don't think limiting kids to one school lunch dessert a week will fix it either... but it's one step of many)

I was responding to the thread in general. That's why I didn't quote anyone. Sorry if that wasn't clear. :)

Revamping/not cutting P.E. would be a HUGE help...

i agree - my p.e. was a joke... i figured out my freshman year that if i dressed out and took the paper tests i could pass with a C while refusing to participate... so i did. didn't help that our PE was all team sports, and there were 4 future pro athletes in my classes...

so too would teaching some level of proper nutrition in health classes

Sounds nice, but nutrition has to do with what is served at home.

Besides, nutrition is already taught now, from pre-school all the way through high school. What people do with that knowledge is an entirely different matter, but kids today are certainly given that knowledge.

As long at it's a Republican Commander in Chief you Conks would call it patriotic and anyone that didn't sing would be a freedom hater.

I remember in 1976 Michael Chrichton's "The Great Train Robbery"
That sh!t woke me up to what writing was - I was in the 6th grade - and previously had only read crap apparently
So in 2006 re-read it 30 years later as a test... and it's still "Pure Awesome"

Then (as if that wasn't enough) 1977 The Dragons of Eden by Carl Sagan
That sh!t totally changed my idea of Humans and this world (and ultimately God)
It reads a little dated as CAT scans and MRI technology would have contributed some nice touches but still one of the great books of the 70's

Dude..!!
The Great Train Robbery is ridiculously well crafted - the man could write - it's a well researched work up of the original event that shocked the world of the wealthy elite in the 1850's... Edward Pierce was probably the most fascinating man alive at that time (much like AZGF is today)
