Agree with Mounty & the Col. And I think that those rights should be extended nationwide with regard to hospital visitation, insurance, inheritance, etc....family is afforded certain rights with regards to these situations and a commitment via civil union joins those two as family. Screw the "marriage" semantics.....all this because states decided a long time ago to make a few bucks on marriage licenses.... :ohno: :coffee:

BOSTON—During a widely publicized press conference at the Boston University School of Medicine Friday, researchers announced a breakthrough new technique that cures homophobia by immersing patients in a large glass tank overflowing with gays. "Rather than avoid one's fear of homosexual men, we believe it's crucial to face it head on," behavioral psychologist Dr. Dolph Kleineman told reporters, explaining how homophobic subjects are hooked up to a harness and lowered into a room containing bare-chested men dancing suggestively to the latest club hits, kissing, and feeding one another strawberries. "So far the treatment has been successful, with early test subjects being able to go out into the real world and see a gay couple hold hands without making a bigoted remark." When asked if there was a risk of subjects getting stuck in the tank of writhing men, Kleineman said the gays would be so oiled up that patients would have no trouble slipping in and out.

Hmmm...
you don't say - well excuse me - I'll be behind the sofa...
(however you do know that virtually all republicans say they're not against gay marriage so nobody can figure out who does the voting on this issue)

I echo the civil unions for all idea.

Make the ceremony and the details a religious thing. There are aspects to relationships and partnerships beyond just love and affection and commitment. It's unfair to block people from these benefits (or prevent them from being exposed to the difficulties and complications) because of sexual preference.

And I agree with the comment somewhere along the way that two gay men getting married doesn't weaken anyone else's marriage. And if it does, you need to reconsider why you got married, and what your marriage is based on.

And if you think God would decide to destroy America based on allowing gays to marry (and these are probably some of the people voting, either because they believe this, or because they know their constituents believe this), then you've got on some serious blinders. America has supported and/or turned and looked the other way at plenty of things worse than recognizing that there are homosexuals out there, and some of them might like to live together in a legitimate, official relationship with all the benefits associated.

Pretty much this. (Edit: except the Southern Baptist part. Agnostic here. I'd be an atheist, but that's way too much of a committment).

Not to get off topic here, but I have a question for the Jon. If you and your boyfriend go to a church/marriage kind of place and in the presence of your family and friends pronounce your love for one another and are pronounced married by the clergy/judge/person running the show, are you married? Are you any more married if some paper pusher in some office at a courthouse somewhere stamps one of those pieces of paper with a stamp that says so? I'd say no, but I don't like the govt. all that much, and think they should go somewhere quiet and play "go fuck yourself". Just saying.

In our society today, marriage has three audiences:

1) The couple, affirming to each other that they have a special bond
2) Society, again, affirming that special bond
3) Government/Legal - married couples are treated differently for thousands of different legal, tax and benefit issues.

I know the Libertarian goal would be to have Government out of marriage, but that is a long term goal - won't happen for decades, if ever. Too many straight couples have vested interests in keeping the Government in marriage. In the mean time, I just want the same recognition, legally, and from those that care, societially.

I kinda realized the whole legal part. But that is an entirely different set of issues from the objections I hear from most religious nuts. They seem to be objecting on pure moral grounds. The whole "God Hates Fags" issue.

I don't see why it would matter to them if you and your partner want to go get insurance together. Or if you file joint returns, etc. I know it does matter to them, I just don't see how it fits in their argument.

As to the "marriage" part, again assuming you first and foremost want to get married because you love one another, and not because you wanna save some money on insurance, what does the opinion of a bunch of nutjob religious fanatics matter really?

Gay marriage? I don't really care one way or the other. I've been happily married to the same woman for 20 years. I fail to see how gay marriage is going to make a difference on that one way or the other.

Cid, you are aware that gays don't marry women, aren't you?

But seriously, I more or less agree with Appa and ASUM...there are some privileges of getting married that shouldn't exist for gays or straights, and for those that should exist (hospital visitation rights, citizenship for spouses, etc.) gay couples should get.

Don't know where Cleets gets the idea that CS is some kind of hotbed of religious conservatism. Even JSO doesn't seem to think there is a cogent argument against gay marriage, even though he won't admit it.

Look guys, heres the thing about Gays marring each other.

1. Whats the point?
2. Relax, a "marriage" is just a legal document
3. Why do you guys say "oh how could blacks vote against gay marriage in such large numbers like that! blah blah"?
4. Marriage is a gift & a curse.
5. Marriage is like a biblical thing & being gay is prohibited... wat are you trying to prove.
6. Honestly, how could you "do" another guy
7. Dont u guys think its gay to have to grown men layin up in the bed on their stomachs with their legs flipped up?
8. Ive heard that gay domestic disputes are the worst! Is that true?
9. Wouldnt it be easier in life for u guys to move to Frisco or Atlanta?
10. Certain male parts or made or certain female parts. Wouldnt you agree?

I don't think that CS.com is a hotbed for religious conservatism
I think that obviously on a National Level somebody must be lying
because nobody seems to openly admit to being against Gay Marriage
However the last time I checked there didn't seem to be too many places available for gays to get married

so somebody must be voting against it..?
yet nobody seems to want to admit that they are
and the only reason a person could possibly be against Gay Marriage would be Biblical
so apparently the Bible seems to be acceptable as legislation
