Asheville Pastor, Former Catholic, Faces Child Abuse Charges

Post by Appaholic »

ASHEVILLE - Police charged a local pastor with misdemeanor child abuse involving his 11-year-old daughter.

According to a warrant served Wednesday, Greg Metcalf, a former Catholic, created a “substantial risk of physical injury” to the girl by stuffing a wash rag in her mouth and spraying her in the face with water while she was taking a bath on Oct. 6.

Metcalf, 49, pastor of Westwood Baptist Church, also was charged with misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a minor. A warrant states the charge involved a lack of medical care

So it was his formerly being Catholic that led to his assholishness. Not being a "pastor" of that nut job WBC. OK.

Right, because if it was the Catholic influence, he wouldn't have bothered a girl... :thumb:

When they do this type of thing, then yes (and not limited to Catholics, but any religion that would do this:)

Mary Ellen Russell, executive director of the Maryland Catholic Conference, a leading opponent of same-sex marriage, said she has been distressed by the debate and the governor's decision.

"It's always troubling when someone in such a public position openly disagrees with the church," she said, calling defeat of the legislation "a critically important issue for the church."

A few hundred Catholic priests and laity lobbied lawmakers Monday night on same-sex marriage and other issues as part of an annual event organized by the Maryland Catholic Conference.

Wouldn't have had a thing to do with this guy, in this story, abusing his own child. I'm all in favor of priests marrying, and it'll probably happen someday, but abuse does happen outside of the Catholic Church. Doesn't excuse the horrible atrocities at all for the Church in terms of the abuse that has happened and the even worse efforts to hide it - in that regard, the Church deserves all of the criticism and scorn that it does get - but like TTBF said, this article, the way that it is written, is almost a carbon copy of the Know-Nothing mantra that is apparently still alive and well in this country, especially in certain areas.

Beyond the fact this guy wasn't even a Catholic priest...
What does allowing priests to marry have to do with raping and abusing children?

I was responding to GF's comment about anti-Catholic bias, which I believe has a lot to do with the child-abuse scandals (obviously there are other factors).

If you allowed priests to marry, they wouldn't be suffocating their natural desires, and consequently preying on altar boys, whom they then terrify into staying silent. Makes sense, no?

Yup, if he had been a priest, then by all means, it's an easy connection and I don't think anyone would even take notice.

ya know - Maryland Catholics, including priests have been calling FOR the Maryland bill to pass too... risking ex-communication to do so in the case of Fr. Joe Palacios.

video is fairly long and a bit dry - but the point remains...

Like I said, I have no problem with priests marrying, I think it's an idea that should happen anyway. But I think you're oversimplifying it by saying that it's because they are suffocating their natural desires that they abuse kids. If you actually want to abuse a kid, it has nothing to do with you not getting to have sex with a woman - it's because you're a sicked, twisted, perverted, inhuman person. There's plenty of married people that still find a way to abuse kids, their own and others - being married doesn't stop you from being sick, twisted, and perverted.

No.

Pedophilia is not engaged in because one cannot "get their rocks off" in another way... it's not a by-product of celibacy...

F'ing kids under the age of 12 ain't just your normal perversion. I would bet there are a disturbingly high number of married people, be it lay person or nonCatholic clegry, out there doing the same horrible thing.

Fair enough. But that also makes me wonder how/why so many sick, perverted people are allowed into the clergy in the first place.

FYI, there ARE married priests in the Catholic Church. There just aren't that many of them. The vast majority of them (if not all of them) were married as ANGLICAN priests and converted. I knew one who was an Army chaplain (the only one in the military, as I understood it) who came down to Barstow from Ft Irwin to celebrate Mass for our Marines. It worked out great for him because his wife took care of things he didn't like doing, like washing and ironing the altar linens.

If it was so easy to just pick out of a crowd the sick and perverted people, we as a society would do that irregardless if they wanted to be Catholic clergy or not. However, there's a lot of sick and perverted subhumans who seem perfectly fine until their crimes come to light.

I've never heard of such a thing. Deacons can be married. One of my FIL good friends was married, had a big old family. His wife died, the family was all out of the house and became a priest. But I've never heard of a active Catholic priest being married.
