Let' have some context for that number.

That's the total figure for a period of time beginning in 1950 -- now a period of 62 years. Over 110,000 men served as priests in the US during that time period. Also, of that figure, 56% of the accused were named by only one accuser.

Almost 70% of these accused were ordained before 1970. The number of reported cases after 1984 dropped dramatically, due to procedures put in place in the mid-80s.

For the most recent two years, there have been a total of six cases out out over 40,000 active priests -- placing the present rate of abuse by priests extremely below the general societal rate of 6 to 8%.

In most cases when the Church is criticized, it is for events that happened over 25 years, when general understanding of this issue was not as evolved as it is today.

Tip of the iceberg only. The catholic church has been covering up this dirty secret for 2000 years. Case after diocese-going-bankrupt case has revealed a systematic cover up by the church and noncompliance with state authorities. The cases that make the statistics in the catholic apologist "studies' are but a small fraction of the total that actually occurred.

It's a fact that less than 25% of child sexual abuse cases are even reported.

Again, considering the insidious nature (religion and threats) and sophistication of the catholic coverup including the participation of its highest officers (pope )- combined with their billions in resources, hideouts all over the world for offenders, reputation as "holy" and untouchable and above the law, and most important - their unfettered access to millions of children and altar boys - the number of unreported is much higher for those abused by Joltin Joe's and Appaholics church.

ASHEVILLE - Police charged a local pastor with misdemeanor child abuse involving his 11-year-old daughter.

According to a warrant served Wednesday, Greg Metcalf, a former Catholic, created a “substantial risk of physical injury” to the girl by stuffing a wash rag in her mouth and spraying her in the face with water while she was taking a bath on Oct. 6.

Metcalf, 49, pastor of Westwood Baptist Church, also was charged with misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a minor. A warrant states the charge involved a lack of medical care
