at NDSU we had mostly single-sex dorms - members of the opposite sex had to be out by 1 am on weeknights and 2 am on weekends, iirc
if you got caught - the offender was kicked out and sent home... if you were a frequent repeat offender... you usually had to deal with a fine of $25... but i don't that ever happened in the 4 years i lived on campus.

At public schools, on the other hand, well, the policies had better be clear and made known at orientation. Kids are usually better at covering that stuff up at the public schools, though....

covering it up? i dunno about that... they're just more realistic at the administration level about the consequences of putting 15,000 newly emancipated children in a contained environment with large amounts of drugs and alcohol and raging hormones...SuperHornet wrote:Eh. I'm not saying that with private schools with honor codes that it isn't "buy the ticket, take the ride" because it certainly is... but good lord, what 18 year old in their right mind signs up to forgo some of the best parts of the college experience?

My friend ended up going there because her parents made her. She loved it though and didn't really have any complaints about the experience.* Other than breaking a few rules and having to pay some fines (thank God they never caught her for breaking some of the bigger rules), she honestly didn't have any issues with the Liberty experience.* If you ever visit, you'll find that they have a nice campus and other than some of the sketchy science that's taught, LU has some great academic programs. Re: BYU Kicks Davies off team
I was just reading BYU's message board and their users think that Davies should be reinstated and given a lesser punishment if he immediately agrees to marry his girlfriend. From all the options available, that's their solution to salvage a basketball season...something that essentially amounts to a forced marriage.
Re: BYU Kicks Davies off team
Um, one of our Liberty posters. I can't recall his name, cuz he's dead to me now, but he hasn't ever had beer/coffee. WTF!?!?! Sex while drinking beer? Yes, please! Sex while drinking coffee? Well, no, cuz that's not an opportune time for the squirts. But I'll surely have a cup of coffee afterwards with my cigarette!TwinTownBisonFan wrote: I'm not saying that with private schools with honor codes that it isn't "buy the ticket, take the ride" because it certainly is... but good lord, what 18 year old in their right mind signs up to forgo some of the best parts of the college experience?

BYU is like a scene from theat Shyamalan move "The Village", it's like their own little enclave that lives separate lives from the rest of the civilized world. Kicked off the team for having sex wth your gf, unbelievable.

I don't understand the heat BYU's admin is taking for this. It's not like they hide the honor code from the students. The guy agreed to live by it, and he knew the consequences of his actions.

The problem is that it seems that the coach/AD seem to be taking flack for what was a SCHOOL decision. Like they should enforce differently for athletes. Give me a break....jcmanson wrote:I don't understand the heat BYU's admin is taking for this. It's not like they hide the honor code from the students. (No, not everybody here was taking that tack. Others were taking the tack that it shouldn't be a school rule at all. They forget that private institutions reserve the right to stay true to their founding principles.)

True. But, I couldn't help but notice you're listed as a fan of Liberty. Regardless of what moral code you live by, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with the expected behaviors of a BYU or a Liberty student - they clearly are a minority and exceptions to what college students behaviors are stereotyped at across the country. There are countless stories of sex, drugs, alcohol, fights, arrests at countless college campuses - I just posted previously a link to just the police records for the top 25 FBS programs. Many people just read this & wonder why they make a big deal out of a victimless offense. Personally, I have a hard time calling having sex with your girlfriend an offense but that's the life I guess BYU students choose.jcmanson wrote:I don't understand the heat BYU's admin is taking for this. On a side note, all this can only help the new Broadway musical "The Book of Mormon" that the creators of South Park have put together - can't wait to see that one.

At most schools, this is standard behavior. But schools like BYU, its not. The players agree to live by the honor code before they ever step foot on the court. They also know what the consequences could/will be of their behavior.bluehenbillk wrote:There are countless stories of sex, drugs, alcohol, fights, arrests at countless college campuses - I just posted previously a link to just the police records for the top 25 FBS programs. I just can't understand why a D-I caliber athlete, with many options, would CHOOSE to go to a school like that. Not for nothing, and I don't mean it as an offense to an LU alum or student (presumably)... it's just not something that "I" understand.

I don't take any offense, I understand drinking/partying/sleeping around is very much a part of "normal" college behavior. And it happens at LU also (I'm sure it also happens at BYU, obviously now) it's just not at the same level as other colleges.

Davies, from what I can gather, is Mormon, so BYU was a logical choice.

may have changed my mind...
turns out - this likely ISN'T even-handed handling of their "honor code"
normally there is a process...
normally it's private...
by the looks of it... they hung this kid out to dry in order to look good. (and if you read the columnists... they're all nodding their head at what BYU did being "all principled")

At the time I was at Sac, Sierra Hall was coed by door. Grace Covell Hall at UOP (with a Methodist history and still recognizes Methodist scholarships though they don't really go by that anymore) is coed by door. (Those were the dorms I stayed at during my time there.)SDHornet wrote:All of Sac State's are co-ed. Some by floor, some by wing, and the one I was in alternated by door.Grizalltheway wrote:

I've heard that some schools are "enlightened" enough to have coed rooms. Not sure I could handle that, but as adults things could probably be "worked out."
