My experience with cops from up north are that they tend to be fiscally and socially conservative right up to the point where you threaten THEIR contracts. However, there is a big difference between police and fire unions and the teachers' unions. First, teacher significantly outnumber police officers and firefighters. The budget busters are usually the teachers' unions. Second, police officers and firefighters have NO RIGHT TO STRIKE. They are two different animals in terms of their ability to disrupt the daily operations of public services.

Plus I believe Walker exempted the police and firefighters from having collective bargaining rights removed.CID1990 wrote:Definitely an irony.ALPHAGRIZ1 wrote:http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/03 ... s-custody/

Re: Wisconsin GOP orders Arrest of Dems
Except for liking Jimmy Carter and ONE CA Assembly Democrat, I'm a Republican through and through, and even I consider this pure political grandstanding.
1. The Legislative Branch (especially the majority leader of ONE house of the legislature) does not have police powers. That resides in the executive branch. All they can do is pass a bill requesting the Governor as the head of the Executive Branch to order the state police (a part of the Executive Branch) to do it. The problem is that they can't even do that. Sure the House/Assembly (or whatever WI calls it) can pass such a bill, but it'll never get to the governor (legally, anyway) since the Senate does not have a quorum.
2. Even if the governor were to issue an executive order, the state police has no jurisiction outside of its own state unless (maybe) in hot pursuit, which hardly applies here.
Pure political grandstanding.
Interestingly enough, I had no idea that the Indiana House Democrats have fled to IL as well. Is the minority party in EVERY state going to fly/drive to IL? There's been speculation that CA Republicans may resort to this given the harsh rhetoric Gov. Jerry Brown has been spewing, which is very similar to the WI Republican governor....

The one that should be arrested is the corrupt Walker, and his master the Koches.
Walker is a one-termer, but he doesn't care, because Koches will get him a cushy job afterwards.

Re: Wisconsin GOP orders Arrest of Dems
Now if the Republican party could just get a couple hundred more just like Scott Walker it would go a long way to making normal average people consider voting for them again.
This guy ran on a platform that got him elected and hes actually doing what he said he would. He isnt compromising, hes getting sh*t done and that is refreshing.
Him and Christie are fu*king awesome, its about time we have politicians that take a stand and do what they were elected to first, and not giving a fu*k about getting re-elected.

I'd be shocked if Walker ran on a platform of balancing the budget by giving away $130 million in tax breaks. But I agree, it is refreshing when politicians do what they say.ALPHAGRIZ1 wrote:Now if the Republican party could just get a couple hundred more just like Scott Walker it would go a long way to making normal average people consider voting for them again.

Re: Wisconsin GOP orders Arrest of Dems
We can't assume that what's going to happen over the next 12 months in Wisconsin is going to be good or bad...
This thing just has to play itself out
People (all of us) make decisions and then have to play that decision out - it's not that big of a deal, this is America everybody will have enough food and a place to lay their head (even if it's a homeless shelter)
Worse things could happen than being poor and unemployed in this country
Example:
There are 16 food banks in Seattle alone - I work at the Lake City location a few times a month and some of the people partaking in the provided services are the happiest people I've ever met...
Is it ideal (no) is it what everybody dreamed of when they were a child (no)
But we all make decisions - and then have to play them out - this Wisconsin thing isn't good or bad - it's just a reflection of the direction America might be going in the very near future and that might be okay
Governor Christie in N.J. will tell anybody to their face (straight in the eye) that he's seen the accounting books for NJ and the state is bankrupt and there's no money left... and he's not kidding - and things are going to have to change very soon in his state

Re: Wisconsin GOP orders Arrest of Dems
internal polling in WI suggests Walker is way overplaying his hand...
I don't have all the details, but a colleague just back from consulting down there was saying that while the public thinks the unions need to give ground, they should retain their rights... and their proposed compromise is the course of action the vast majority want taken...
Walker keeps this up, he'll be one and done - like so many tea-baggers.
