Police Officers being A-holes again

This goes beyond the fact that the woman had suffered from a stroke and had impaired speech. Note this statement:

"Irons said the officers spoke with her inside her house, then asked her to step out onto the front porch, where she was arrested."

I beliee her. So they go to her house and talk to her inside. They want to arrest her for public intoxication so they ask her to step outside. What a set of....well...you know where I'm going.

Frankly...this represents a whole new area I need to learn about: The idea of "public intoxiation laws." Are you telling me you can't be "intoxicated" on your own front porch?
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

I'm not a fan of alcohol. I REALLY don't like the idea of being drunk, much less waking up to worship the porcelain god.

But this smacks of entrapment.

Well they (whoever they are) have got a lot of work to do to get there...
You can't even find a cop in the area I live in

seriously...

And the way I understand it Bellevue Kirkland and Redmond (the three cities east of Seattle)
are all reducing their Police Forces as crime is so low there's nothing for the police to do except pull over drunk drivers and that pretty much only happens after 9:00 pm and none of the cops want to work that late - and who can blame them, I mean why..?

A few weeks ago me and the old lady stood around and talked to two cops in down town Bellevue - they were just hanging out leaning up against their cars chatting... a nice cool blustery evening - no radio chatter no problems nothing to do...

Far from a Police State

:coffee:

This is Bellevue - it sits opposite Seattle across Lake Washington...

Haven't even read the thread, and don't plan to. As soon as I saw it was another anti law enforcement thread started by JSO I just  as there has to be at least a 1/2 doz of these...

I disagree with a lot of what JSO posts, but he's right on about this incident. I can see initially suspecting she was drunk, but when offered the chance to review on-the-spot documentation/proof of her condition they refused.

And how in hell do you put someone in a detox cell without any BAC test?

This woman will be getting a lot of money if she presses the issue.

You said it, BDK.

Even so, the cops in this story were way out of line, but where most reasonable people see a case of someone who should just not be in policing because of judgment problems, JSO sees it as representative of all police.

We get it.

This decision just came down last week in Wyoming, the reddest state in the union.

Seems some meth head told the cops these folks had a big grow operation going in their home, and that they were armed to the teeth. Local PD decides to act on this hot tip, and go after this lady with all the modern cop devices;
http://www.powelltribune.com/news/item/ ... ct-updates

Now she did not get her million bucks she was after, but the judge did not just dismiss all the charges either. For this kind of a judgement to come down in this state, is a bit shocking to me.

Wedgie: is that red as in Republican or red as in redneck? Or just the fact that on many maps WY shows up as pink?

It's getting crazy out there with how overbearing the cops are. You can't even sit in the park anymore with your camera taking pictures. It's getting so that the only place you're really free to be yourself is online - but even that isn't safe anymore - one damn tv show and now everyone has decided to turn the world in to 1984.

Since when is this a new thing? Cops have been doing this for as long as I've been drinking. Don't ever voluntarily leave your establishment if you are drunk. Haven't you ever been at a kegger when the cops showed up?

Horney, Wyoming supported McCain by the largest percentage of any state he won in 2009. There are only 14 members out of 90 in the Wyoming legislature that are not Republicans. Our legislature spent time this session attempting to pass a bill that would make participating with national health care reform a felony, a bill that would require a doctor to insist on his patient undergoing an ultrasound before opting for abortion, a bill that would not recognize same sex marriages legally performed in another state, and last but not least they passed a bill making it legal for Wyoming citizens without a felony record to pack concealed weapons without a permit.

Supposedly that last one is a way for alert citizens to quickly dispatch any attack by abortion doctors or gay married people. That is what I told the gun salesman on saturday I was preparing to do with my new .45 auto.

Yes Horney, I would say Wyoming is the reddest state in the union.

Know why that is?

For every person who is pissed off about the cameras in the park, there are 5 who are continually bitching and moaning for them to be installed. There is a LOT of public pull on police agencies for stupid things like that, and when the guy at the big desk is an elected official the squeaky wheel will always get the grease.

In my opinion we have police officers doing something they're not qualified to do when they start judging human impairment level. Maybe some do if they happen to have some kind of medical background but my belief is that most don't. The other day I was having my eyes examined so I took the opportunity to ask the lady doing the exam about nystagmus. She said there's no way police should be using that to judge impairment because too many people have similar manifestations due to causes other than being impaired by some substance.

But that has to do with a discussion we've already had, I guess. What's really bad in this case is asking the woman to go outside so they could arrest her for being "intoxicated" outside. I also really dislike the idea that there's a law that makes it illegal for you to be intoxicated on your own property. If you're disturbing the peace then you should be cited for disturbing the peace. There is no way it should be illegal to simply be in a state of instoxiation induced by a legal substance that one can legally ingest. Also it shouldn't be illegal for anyone to put anything they damn well please into their own system (possible exception if they're pregnant and know it...thorny issue there) ; but that's another issue. Alcohol is a legal substance so there is absolutely NO call for having a law like that.
