Pres. Obama OKs Resumption of Gitmo Trials
Just saw a blurb that the President has authorized the resumption of military trials at Guantanamo Bay.

Change. Except where it's not politically expedient.

I don't love it, but his hands were tied by the Congress - they've added some due process provisions that help alleviate some of my concerns... long term however, the goal is to close Gitmo... which is the right thing to do... don't love it, but really there wasn't any choice...

He had two years of free reign to do whatever the fuck he wanted to with Gitmo....he didn't close it. Now he blames a split Congress for 'having' to resume the trials?

Seriously TTBF....let's call it what it is....he's scared to be labeled soft on terror contrary to his campaign promises...that's OK...it's typical politician CYA....not the "Change" he was advocating and people were expecting, but entirely understandable since he is, after all, a politician...AZGrizFan wrote:BULL SHIT.TwinTownBisonFan wrote:I don't love it, but his hands were tied by the Congress - they've added some due process provisions that help alleviate some of my concerns... long term however, the goal is to close Gitmo... which is the right thing to do... don't love it, but really there wasn't any choice...

Obama - more right wing than REpublicans will admit.
Major disapointment on many fronts. I would argue that over at Democratic Underground, but have been now twice permabanned for criticizing our dear leader.
But, as the standard DU response goes - what, you'd rather have McCain/Palin???

There is nothing right wing about Obama at all. It's called political expediency.dbackjon wrote:Obama - more right wing than REpublicans will admit.

Duck's Unlimited apparently has more credibility than Democratic Underground.

Re: Pres. Obama OKs Resumption of Gitmo Trials
I think Obama has just realized the same thing that Bush's team realized once they got into this - there's no good answer to how to deal with some of these cases and some of these people. It's all fine to be idealistic, but the reality is plenty of these people are still dangerous, very few if any other countries want all of these people back, and trials in criminal courts would be a PR fiasco. Sometimes there aren't easy answers. Frankly, I'd rather that we had just found some other way to house a lot of these guys instead of having one flashpoint location with a fancy nickname like "Gitmo". Tuck these guys away into holes and be done with it. It ain't pretty but it's never going to be pretty. Obama is just learning what every other President has learned at times - what may look simple and clear from the campaign trail is often difficult and grey once in office.

Damn, this country was so much more fun when we were frightened out of our wits 24/7.

I think what Obama learned a long time ago is that it is easy to spew any bullshit on the campaign trail and get away with it.GannonFan wrote:I think Obama has just realized the same thing that Bush's team realized once they got into this - there's no good answer to how to deal with some of these cases and some of these people. Re: Pres. Obama OKs Resumption of Gitmo Trials
I am - I never thought he'd be able to close Gitmo anyway - I certainly didn't vote for him thinking he was going to be able to nor that I even wanted it closed. Like I said, I'd rather they spirit those guys to a bunch of different holes and just forget about them altogether. The only thing I didn't like is that he got a supermajority and rammed through a poor health care bill (that may still do the job in a round about way, but we'll see). I like where he's at now - restricted from his worse impulses by a GOP House and a much narrowed Senate (that will probably also go GOP in 2012) and now able to be more of a leader. We'll see if he's up to it. Clinton found a way to do it and I didn't like him very much compared to Obama. But the clock is certainly ticking now - no more Pelosi's to blame.Ivytalk wrote:Nice apologia, GF!
