The defender must give a step for the offensive player before contact is made. If not it will always be a defensive foul.Mvemjsunpx wrote:BEITZEL LOST IT BEFORE CONTACT. AND HE RAN INTO ADAMS, NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND!!!!!!!

Re: Big Sky Tournament Thread (Men)
I wish I could say the refs didn't decide this game, but they so clearly did. The Griz could have played better, no doubt, but that was just horrible, one-sided officiating.

Officiating absolutely decided this game.
Great run by UNC but what an embarassment in officiating.

He did give a step. Even the ESPN refs commented the Montana player did what he was supposed to.clenz wrote:The defender must give a step for the offensive player before contact is made. It was a toss up call, I would have gone with a block as well.SeattleGriz wrote:He did give a step. The UM defender had good position but that doesn't mean that he should get the call.
I'm not going to argue it with a Montana fan who is pissed about it right now. I have no qualms with the call. Would it be different if I was a UM fan? Probably. As someone watching with no bias towards either program I had no problem with that specific call.

Re: Big Sky Tournament Thread (Men)
I thought he did, but it shouldn't matter because Beitzel lost the ball out of bounds before the contact anyway.clenz wrote:The defender must give a step for the offensive player before contact is made. The refs anticipated the whistle rather than actually waiting to think about what actually happened. And there was no overrule attempt, either. That call was a huge one because the Griz could have got the ball down 2, not to mention that Beitzel is a 91% free throw shooter.

Re: Big Sky Tournament Thread (Men)
NoCo had a 29-16 foul advantage. That itself doesn't mean the officiating was one-sided, but the Griz are a very good team at avoiding fouls (52nd./336 nationally, best in the Big Sky coming in). Montana ranked 161 spots better than the Bears in fouls, yet lost fouls by 13? That seems really strange to me. The Griz could have been a little more aggressive offensively, but that doesn't explain the ticky-tack/mystery defensive fouls. The only reason the final was close was that UNC had an uncharacteristically bad night from the line.
You could argue this was an aberration, but the refereeing was also awful in last night's UNC/NAU game. NoCo only had a 26-24 foul advantage there, but there were a lot of questionable calls in favor of the Bears as many people pointed out last night. I understand that the home team often gets the benefit, but here it looks like the refs consciously gave the home team the benefit.
Oh well, hopefully the Lady Griz will win the tourney and hopefully the Griz will get into the CIT.

Tinkle didn't do the postgame on the radio (asst. Bill Evans did), so we didn't get to hear his thoughts. Hopefully the press conference will be put up somewhere. Reports on eGriz (yes, I know what's that worth) are that he just went livid on one of the refs after the game ended.

Re: Big Sky Tournament Thread (Men)
Yeah, I saw that. Given the close final, that error was a big, big deal.dbackjon wrote:Big Sky apologized to NAU for **** them over yesterday
Re: Big Sky Tournament Thread (Men)
Really. Well...it doesn't make me feel one bit better. I've never heard Mitch Strohman (NAU's hoops announcer) lay into refs like that. Those two potential points missed out on when NAU wasn't given free throws after the 7th UNC foul in the first half was pure bush league. The 35-17 free throw discrepancy was the cherry on top of the steaming turd.dbackjon wrote:Big Sky apologized to NAU for **** them over yesterday
Where did they apologize....any links, guys?
Keeping my hopes up for a CIT or CBI tourney invite for the Lumberjacks. I'm calling a NIT invite for the Griz so if WSU or NAU gets a bid it'll be from the lower ranked tourneys.

Griz won't get in the NIT; I'm guessing CIT (that's what NoCo got into last year). I doubt NAU or Weber will get anything, though hopefully I'm wrong.Keeping my hopes up for a CIT or CBI tourney invite for the Lumberjacks. D'oh. Got it Mvenjsunpx. Thanks.
But I still don't feel any better and I can't imagine NAU's team and coaches do either.
