New York Liberty guard Cappie Pondexter apologized for Twitter postings over the weekend about the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

Pondexter tweeted on Saturday: “What if God was tired of the way they treated their own people in there own country! Idk guys he makes no mistakes.”

She later tweeted: “u just never knw! They did pearl harbor so u can’t expect anything less.”

I posted that she went to Liberty a few posts up.... then deleted it once I realized she didn't. I had searched her name and noticed a lot of "Liberty" results. It turns out there is a WNBA team called the Libery. Who knew?
I think she was one of the Rutgers women Don Imus got in trouble with the PC police about.

You guys slay me. A guy says that God sometimes punishes sin and you act like it's completely out of left field. Crazy.

First let me remind people (especially D1B) that I am an agnostic. What I believe is not the point.

But there is not a mainstream Christian faith out there that does not subscribe to the theology that God does indeed punish people for sin. Actually, I don't think there is a major faith out there with the concept of God or gods that does not subscribe, essentially, to such theology.

If you disagree with it because you are an atheist, fine. But don't act like it's some kind of fringe, irrational view.

What really gets me is people who want to believe in a God but at the same time want to believe anything they do is OK and that God makes the rules based on what they want to do. No such thing as adverse consequences from God based on behavior.

Well, you know what? If there is a God as people conceptualize that, God makes the rules.

It's not a fringe view. But, it is irrational. Just because a lot of people believe it doesn't mean it's rational.

And what is the basis for saying it's not rational? Do you have proof that there is no God that is of nature basically along the lines of the Christian concept?

Why is it any more rational to say there is NOT such a God than to say that there IS?

I didn't say it is irrational to believe in a god. I said it's irrational to believe God uses large scale natural disasters like Japan as a form of PUNISHMENT. That belief can come from faith... but, it can come from rationality.

What rational reasons could someone come to the conclusion that God unleashed the earthquake and tsunami on Japan as a form of punishment?

I don't think the poster to whom I am referring said that.
