Labor costs would be up, profit margins down. You'd see more competition from locally grown produce ( which is already starting to happen here and will continue with rising fuel prices ), and tropical fruits in northern latitudes would be expensive.

If I were king for a day, I'd put Alpha on the border, deport, and put anyone on government assistance to work in the fields for what they're currently paying the illegals.

0% unemployment, cheap fruit, no anchor babies, problem solved.

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama is renewing his call for Laurent Gbagbo (loh-RAHN' bahg-BOH') to immediately leave power in Ivory Coast to help end violence that has U.N. peacekeepers and French troops enforcing an international mandate to protect civilians.

Obama commented Tuesday as officials said Gbagbo was huddled in a bunker at home, surrounded by troops supporting Alassane Ouattara (ah-lah-SAHN' wah-tah-RAH'), the country's democratically elected and internationally recognized leader.

Gbagbo's refusal to step aside after losing a November election has brought Ivory Coast to the brink of civil war.

Obama says the violence and bloodshed could have been avoided had Gbagbo respected the election outcome. He also called on Gbagbo to order those who are fighting to keep him in power to put down their weapons.

I am not opposed to sending them there to work, I just don’t see how it would happen. It would take an extreme level of desperation to get those folks out into the fields. Also they would be no where near as efficient as the folk who are currently doing the job which would put the producers at risk of losing product ($$$). I can’t imagine many of them being happy about the possibility of smaller profits.

If they resort to criminal activities...then lock them up. Then, ship the criminals out to pick the fields to make restitution to society.

I have no problem forcing chain gangs to work in the fields, although these people will have no incentive to work hard/efficiently. Also I would think “low risk/non violent” criminals would only be the ones allowed outside of a prison.

So when/if things recover who will replace these over qualified dish washers when they move on to a better paying job? Having these legal people doing these jobs is great and it’s something that should have always been going on, but this still doesn’t answer the question of who will work the fields if all the illegal labor is deported.

That’s what ICE is paid to do. Of course placing heavy fines on employers who hire illegal labor would also help solve this problem as well.

What is receiveing little attention is the ties that Gbagbo has with the evangelical community in the states. Both Gbagbo and his wife are Evangelicals, and have close ties to the "Family" and other far-right Evangelical political groups, who have been pressuring for the US to support Gbagbo
