And let's not forget that George Bush was still president. Gumby would have beaten McCain in 2008.

Not really. He's disappointed people at both extremes... and they're the loudest... so it seems like he's "disappointed everyone"

But, his approval ratings are relatively high for this point in his presidency. He's higher than both Reagan and Clinton at this point in their first term.

If you really think that his approval ratings matter in comparison to other presidents during specific times of their presidency and that they pertain to the next election outcome you are full of more anal jelly than you let on

You're right. Approval ratings aren't important at all in gauging future elections.

I'll just stick with your myopic view of politics. If there's a shutdown, Obama will "certainly" be defeated. Obama has disappointed "everyone." etc.

First off that's funny.
Secondly how long have we had approval ratings? I really don't know.

I'll defend KY on this point. Historical patterns often repeat themselves. Reagan and Clinton were both mired in some pretty nasty recessions (Clinton's not quite as nasty) and Obama obviously inherited the worst one since the Great Depression from Bush. The first two were reelected.

Repeat after me: It's the economy, stupid.

Obama has 18 months to make something happen. The economy has already started perking up. If that continues, he probably wins.

OK so how does Obama fare against some of the others? Were you being selective or is this a normal pattern for a presidency?

I'd love to see Bush Sr. approval ratings, or Bush Jr for that matter. Obama's approval rating in comparison to Clinton's or Reagan's won't get him reelected. he's spent more than Clinton and the economy as of now is worse than both. History may repeat itself in the economy influencing the election but other legislation passed by the current administration may hender the economy's ability to recover as it did during the Clinton and Reagan years

if the economy doesn't recover, Obama is a one term president. It may improve some but I would think it would need to be drastic improvement...that may be an amendment to my prior post but it's common sense  the economy is Obama's only hope

No, it's not. The economy is better than it was at the same point in Reagan's term. And the economic problems at the end of HW's term/beginning of Clinton's aren't in the same stratosphere as the recession of 2008-2009.

Unemployment was 10.3% in March 1983. Unemployment is 8.8% in March 2011.

But its not going to get much better....just a small up-tick, then down again this summer...

Oil prices are skyrocketing...

Bond prices are dropping...(did I tell you to get into TSP and dump bonds.... Opps...)

State budgets are heading south...California is a sneeze away from going under, even without an earthquake...

Yea,,,Obama is going to get reelected because of the economy...

oh look both the Bush's approval ratings were higher at this time.....guess that means Bush Sr. Should have been reelected. Too bad. Approval ratings in comparison to other presidents means absolute shit. the recession was in effect before Obama took office so naturally the economy is going to improve earlier in comparison to Reagan (as his recession started in the first few months of him taking office). The point is that the 2 men had a different approach to healing the economy and I'll believe that the economy is all sunshine and rainbows when I see it. He has 18 months. If it isn't better by election day he is toast and the stimulus, bailouts, healthcare bill, or government shutdown will not help his cause either.

Both Bush's benefited from popular wars (Desert Storm and Afghanistan). That's why their approval ratings were sky high. The first one had the economy tank and the second one ran against John Kerry. That's why one wasn't reelected and one was.

this is why it's BS to compare approval ratings. Different aspects and circumstances shape different elections so no, I don't care what Reagan and Clinton's numbers were and how Obama's were higher. The economy as of now is tanking and the government has expanded it's spending, that's what matters. Until the economy improves that's all that will matter and Obama will be shown the door like Jimmy Carter

Please explain how the economy is tanking? Unemployment is falling, GDP is growing. It's not improving at a fast pace... but, how can you claim it's tanking?

What I don't get is why the Democrats wouldn't at least agree to the one week continuing resolution. Ok, so it cut spending by $12 billion for one week and they didn't like some of the spending cuts. Well, since they didn't agree the government will shut down and whatever they wanted in terms of funding won't be funded anyway. Like their apparent Sacred Cow Planned Parenthood.

I cannot believe that Harry Reid actually came out and said that it all comes down to funding of Planned Parenthood. Like it's absolutely ESSENTIAL that the Federal government funds that organization and the Democrats are saying they'd rather see the Federal government "shut down" than see it stop giving money to Planned Parenthood (an organization founded in order to eliminate the Black population)?

Seriously. Is there anybody out there who continues to side with the Democrats on this? I know the answer is "yes." But that totally baffles me.

unemployment is still high, gas prices are higher than they've been in a couple years. We're barely better off than where we were at the end of Bush's term
