And what will all you dumbasses' (not you specifically, Sly) response be when one of these "freedom fighters" that's been SOOOOOO wronged over the past few years is a key piece of the next terrorist attack on American soil?slycat wrote:Gitmo was a black eye for America.

Re: GITMO Closing
Sorry folks, I gotta believe there's more here than meets the eye...
...if Obama closes Gitmo, which he's indicated will happen over the next year...and one of those satanic monkeys ends up carrying out a violent act ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD...
...Obama will be gone and the Dems will be bent over for years (a-la Willie Horton). I can't believe Obama or the Dem leadership would be that dumb.
Rather, I wouldn't be surprised if he works out some deal with Pakistan or a middle eastern country to take custody of the prisoners...and once there, they'll get "lost in the shuffle", and wind up "escaping" some night from some hole-in-the-wall prison camp. (hint...they'll take the prisoner's azz out into the country some night, and he'll never be seen again.)
Think that's far fetched? Think Obama and the Dem's are too "compassionate" to allow something like that to happen?
Probably right...they'll let the guy ride off into the sunset on a unicorn.

And it wouldn't be the first time this has happened. It's amazing how little of the actual dirty work the government has to actually do itself to get their desired outcome. These guys will long for the days of "torture."travelinman67 wrote:Sorry folks, I gotta believe there's more here than meets the eye...

I didn't hear they were letting all the prisoners go, just closing Gitmo and reveiwing the cases. Considering the ineptitude of the CIA, the military and the Bush Admin, I wouldn't be surprised if some of them are innocent or are not a threat.
Glass half empty this all you want AZ, you know it's a good move. In fact your here Dubya expressed desire to close Gitmo but, quote, NEVER GOT AROUND TO DOING IT. He's a typical republican, when the issue require more than a choice between black and white, ignore it and hope that the problem goes away.

I would have preferred we worked with those countries BEFORE we close it down. Not make a rash decisions to maintain popularity with those countries. I would have preferred he did some talking to these leaders before signing the executive order. Now it is a race against the clock to make the right decision on what to do with these people. My beef has nothing to do with fear, it has to do with setting a time table for when to do it. Sit down, talk it over, come up with what to do, THEN make the closing.

He made this a campaign promise. Now we're forced to do something. He's placing high expectations on his teams, something Bush never did. I like it.
He gave a timetable of a year to close it. This is very achievable.
By making the executive order he now has some credibility that may be helpful in negotiations with others.
We have plenty of prisons here to accomodate. We are experts at imprisoning people. In fact we rank #1 in the world at imprisoning our own people. Those assholes will not make it a week in Joliet.

A couple of senators have said they don't want them in their states...they will make the prisons terrorist targets is the arguement...
Since they will be in the federal system, I really can't see an assualt on, say , the SuperMax in Marion IL or Fort Levenworth, KS...

I applaud Murtha stepping up to the plate.
I read the article and of course the outspoken "afriad" are primarily republicans participating in the same fear mongering that got us into the war to begin with. I like the "placing terrorists in OUR NEIGHBORHOODS" line! This (NIMBY) is simply a politically motivated opportunity to obstruct a noble move on the part of our president.
And when did republicans becomes such pussies? You mean we can't handle these people in Leavenworth? Why are you guys so afraid?

I think his offer may have been more symbolic.
Keeping all of those assholes in the same facility, on our soil, is probably not a good idea.
Review their cases, and split up those deemed guilty or dangerous, then send em to a god awful max sec american prison where they will be killed and/or repeatedly ass fukced within days of arrival.

Yeah I'd imagine terrorists are right up there with pedophiles and mother killers to prisoners. They should last all of 1 lunch before getting shanked.
