No. According to the Conks in the "Obama brain surgery conspiracy" thread... this isn't "pushing" the rumor... it's merely mentioning it.... and there's a distinct difference.... I think. Get them to explain it for you.
Nice one.

I like some of the Talking Heads stuff and Charlie Christ is not one of my favorites.
But David Byrne is a jerk.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth

he lost that primary in part due to those rumors...
And I guess you have the polling data to support that statement.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth

Is there anything in particular that makes him a jerk?
I don't know what MAKES him a jerk. But what we're talking about in this thread is certainly indicative of being a jerk.
Understand that I am not a fan of Charlie Christ. But as far as I'm concerned only a jerk would do what David Byrne did in this case.

If I say, "Charlie Christ's political opponents attacked him based on rumors that he is homosexual," I am mentioning that there are rumors that he is homosexual and that some people are using that.
If I say, "It's been said that Charlie Christ is homosexual and I think there may be something to it," I am promoting it.
Yes. There is a distinct difference.

American genius David Byrne recently settled his copyright complaint against former Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, who used a Talking Heads song without permission in his U.S. Senate campaign, by making Crist film this 90-second abject apology and post it to YouTube.

I read through this whole thread before watching the video, and quite frankly I was expecting Crist to self-flagellate on video, call himself demeaning names, etc. What I saw was a professional, well thought out (obviously with some suggestions from Byrne) and seemingly sincere apology. I guess I should have just watched the vid first, since it was kind of a let-down after all the comments.
I do not see this as David Byrne humiliating Charlie Crist. You see, SK, what you cannot understand here is that there are things that people of honor and principle do. One of those things is that they take responsibility for their actions, as well as for the actions of people acting on their behalf. It is not surprising that you see this as simply one man humiliating another, because that is right about at the ceiling of your intellect.
I know very little about Charlie Crist. Maybe he is a slimeball for all I know, but he did something you cannot understand, SK. He behaved like a man of character and delivered the apology that Byrne wanted. He could have said "Nope, take me to court and I'll just pay the money."

No. Honor and integrity would have been making an apology on your own free will. Not being forced to by a lawsuit or the treat of losing thousands of dollars.
Spinning this as an example of honor, principle, and integrity is a fucking joke.

the Crist as gay rumors have run rampant for years. and Rubio and the Tea Party were pushing that narrative aggressively. Hell, I'm 1500 miles away, and I knew about it.
Crist has been divorced four times, each marriage being a little more beard-like... largely to keep up appearances.

I believe blueballs is a little more connected to Florida politics than you are, so excuse me if I take his word over yours.
Nice try though.
The fact that Rubio was a much better candidate notwithstanding, Charlie Crist being an opportunistic chameleon is why he got crushed during the Republican primaries.
Crist was pro-life one day then pro-choice the next. One day he was anti-gay marriage, but the next he was pro-gay marriage. The same can be said about adoption rights for gay parents...for it one day against it the next. One side of his mouth is anti drilling off the Florida coast, but the other side of his mouth says something totally different. He "didn't support the stimulus package" according to his interviews with the press, but he was one of the first ones humping Obama's leg with his hand out begging for stimulus money.
As you said, you're 1500 miles away. You didn't get to hear and see the daily barrage of Rubio's commercials featuring Charlie contradicting himself in his own words and in his own voice. After a few days of these commercials, even Charlie knew his campaign was DOA.

They never want to admit the real reason when they lose. It is always better for them to make something up that better fits their overall narrative.

Dude. That is so deep.
Crist did it to avoid getting the bejeezus sued out of him.
Best part is you know Byrne was behind the camera making sure that Crist was demonstrating sufficient sincerity, probably had him do a couple of dozen takes.

No shit. If he's a 'person of honor and principle', why did he use the song without permission in the first place? Shit, why is he running for political office if he has so much character?

not pushing anything - the rumor has been around for over a decade. and rubio's people (and much of the FL GOP establishment) pushed it aggressively throughout the primary.
I'm not saying it's the only reason he lost the primary - but it is absolutely part of it (especially in how it helped Rubio raise money and keep it from Crist)

Coming from the king of spin, I suppose that's not too insulting.
Like I said, I don't know what kind of guy Crist is, I know next to nothing about him. All I see is a guy making an apology and admitting he was wrong. He certainly could have gone to court and lost, and would still be able to maintain that he did not believe he or his campaign did anything wrong.
Again, to you it's humiliation. It's about one-upmanship and gotcha politics. To me, it's taking responsibility. Since the guy is, in fact, on camera making this very public apology means that the only spin going on here is yours when you try to assert that this was his only option and that was the only reason he did it.
Are you somehow claiming that Crist's action vis a vis this video was not the honorable path after using Byrne's song?

If it isn't done under duress, sure, and perhaps he is a truly remorseful thief, but usually your thief is only remorseful about getting caught. So I have my doubts about Chuck being filled with nobility. More likely Byrne's lawyers had him by the balls and he risked losing serious money.

What?
He appealed to the base conservatives because he seems to have core beliefs and was able to connect with the base better than criss cross Charlie ever did.
I know the Donk party line is to paint all conservatives as homophobes, racists, anti-immigrant, etc. but sorry, Charie Crist lost because: 1) He was a horrible candidate. AND 2) Marco Rubio ran a much better campaign. Period.

Dude, I spent 5 years working with base conservatives - I know full and well what they are. I also know what the GOP has done in the past 15 years to purge itself of anyone who isn't a strict adherent to those extreme views. Crist's defeat by Rubio is just another example of a moderate being pushed out by a party embracing a hard-line agenda.

AND Rubio is from South Florida and Hispanic, which means he had a built in advantage, even though the guy is a superstar and a fast riser first in state politics and now nationally.
As for Crist, he had no trouble portraying himself as a conservative and riding Jeb Bush's coattails first to victory as Attorney General and then Governor. He ran as a conservative in the past for AG and Governor and governed as governor as a moderate. THAT, plus Rubio being who and what he is, and the fact that the state's populace figured out his charade and that he is an unprincipled oppotunist, is why he got swamped in both the primary and general election last year... it has absolutely nothing to do with sexual orientation.
The rhetoric about his losing because of rumors about sexual orientation is an outlandish attempt to brand the population of Florida as homophobic and deflect attention and accountability away from the asskicking the Tea Party and by default the GOP gave the democrats statewide- which amounts to a loud and decisive rebuttal of Obama, Pelosi, and Reid- last fall.

That's possible. But I don't default directly to the humiliation factor in something like this. Perhaps his wallet was smaller than his ego, in which case he did this under duress.
That being said, it was a stupid move by his campaign to use the song in the first place, but stupidity and integrity are two separate things.
