Texas begs for Federal help
Gov. Rick Perry has asked the White House to declare Texas a major disaster area as a result of unchecked wildfires across the state.
In an urgent letter to President Barack Obama, Perry said firefighters have already responded to 7,807 fires across the state that have burned more than 1,528,714 acres.
"As wildfires continue to rage across our state, Texas is reaching its capacity to respond to these emergencies and is in need of federal assistance," Perry said in a statement issued by his office. "I urge President Obama to approve our request quickly so Texans can continue receiving the resources and support they need as wildfires remain an ongoing threat."
The state's request for help includes a plea for firefighting aircraft, personnel and other assets.

Sorry, but the Constitution doesn't specifically allow the federal government to help with wildfires. You're on your own, Texas.

Re: Texas begs for Federal help
good lord...
of course they applied for federal disaster relief. that's what this is - a disaster. it isn't begging to ask for assistance from the federal government when the other 49 states do it to... it's part of living in the republic. they (and everyone else) helped Minnesota when the bridge collapsed, california during their numerous maladies, the gulf coast, etc... that's how it works.
while i appreciate a bit of the irony that exists - that a man who joked (joked?) about secession and spoke frequently about nullification is now asking the federal government to help in time of disaster - I also don't think throwing it in his face is either a) decent or b) politically astute. The guy needs help, it took some measure of humility to ask for it - now that he has, we ought to do what Americans are supposed to do during disasters - help them first, make your point - if you must - after the disaster is over.

in your little scenario - we let it burn and richmond tells them that "it's not the place of this government to help a state, that would be an unreasonable federal intrustion... you're on your own"citdog wrote:he wasn't joking. nullify we will and secede if we can. the next time there is a wildfire just send the bill to Richmond.TwinTownBisonFan wrote:good lord...

indeed they might - but if they were legitimately committed to their "states rights" premise (and it wasn't, say... just a way of justifying continuing the barbaric practice of slavery) - they wouldn't interfere in the business of one of their "members"citdog wrote:i think the 13 States of the Confederacy would have quite a competent force of our own thank you very much.TwinTownBisonFan wrote:

Please help me with how responding to a request for aid by a state is interfering in the business of that state? I can't seem to logically connect the dots with out a huge leap of logic.TwinTownBisonFan wrote:indeed they might - but if they were legitimately committed to their "states rights" premise (and it wasn't, say... just a way of justifying continuing the barbaric practice of slavery) - they wouldn't interfere in the business of one of their "members"citdog wrote:

Re: Texas begs for Federal help
the logic that states ought to "handle their own internal affairs" was the "underpinning" of the confederacy (if you believe that it wasn't their slavery-based economic system). in this scenario - the states handle their own internal affairs. moreover, I'm not trying to make super-serious academic point with Citdog... I'm fucking with him, because that's what i do.LeadBolt wrote:Please help me with how responding to a request for aid by a state is interfering in the business of that state? Re: Texas begs for Federal help
Most of the soldiers in the Confederacy served in State units, not Confedrate units. Many were sent to defend states other than their own by their governors, within the framework of their government.
This did not violate States rights as the troups were requested by the other states, not interfering, as you stated. Their is a difference in banding together for the common good under states rights and being forced by a central government to do things to which they were opposed.
There was no prohibition of working together, but rather a prohibition of being forced by the central government to do things that the state was opposed. There is a big difference.
I get you're fucking with him, but based upon flawed logical leaps such as "I don't eat beef because I think it is wrong to kill horses."

OK, I'm slow, but I do get the head slap thing. All you do is fuck with people on here.
When you were spewing all the garbage about picture id's in Minnesota and you're arguments didn't make any sense, you weren't being sincere about the plight of Somali's, etc., but were just fucking with us all. That is why you didn't feel the need to put together a cohesive logical argument and kept spewing disconnected random garbage.
Now that I know not to take you at all seriously, I think we'll get along famously!

Rick Perry pissed me off when he dissed my classmate and TX Dem gubernatorial candidate Bill White (one of Houston's best mayors ever, Donk or not) just because Bill went to Harvard undergrad. Goddam showboating, front-running, Aggie douchebag dillweed. A disgrace to conservatism.
