I hope this isn't a surprise to you, but I know a group of conservative blacks who normally would not vote for someone with the politics of President Obama...
They did vote for him, though, because it was the first time they saw a black man who had a realistic chance of winning...
There are stories about whole black churches...conservative christians...voting for Obama for the same reason...they felt it was the best chance they had in their lifetime of "seeing someone who looks like me in the White House"...
And this is not without precedent...in 1960, Catholics across this country voted for a senator from Massachusetts in record numbers...not because they agreed with John F. Kennedy, but because they finally had a Catholic candidate who had a chance to win and break the protestant stranglehold on the White House...
History, in a way, repeating itself...
