damn that was a frustrating game... Bison had opportunity after opportunity, and just pissed down their leg.
That basically sums up the Mertens era perfectly. It was like Groundhog Day.

When was the last UNI win over an FBS team? How about Montana or SIU even.

Recently SIU has wins over Big 10 powerhouse and charter member, Indiana, and perennial FBS power NIU. They have lost to NIU by 1 pt. on a missed try for 2 with no time on the clock. They lost by an FG to Marshall while holding them to 72 yds. rushing. In all cases they beat the stuffing out of the opponent. Clearly SIU plays tougher FBS teams and represents the MVC better than their also-ran conference mate.

Please tell me you are joking and are making fun of jbb. Indiana is probably the worst Big 10 team most years. NIU and Marshall

If there is 1 thing ndsu fans can hang their hat on is that we are 4-3 against FBS teams. Its pretty impressive actually. Granted they haven't been against the greatest FBS teams, but its more than most FCS teams have done against FBS schools.

NDSU has beat two MAC teams... :? ...and a 1 win Goofer team and a 2 or 3 win Kansas team....

While the wins are nice, they haven't gotten you jack shit and aren't any more impressive than any other FCS over FBS win. Actually, IMO, those wins are along the bottom of FBS wins that impress me.

JaBBer doesn't need anybody to make fun of him, he's more of a self-humiliation kind of guy. Indiana is no worse than Minnesota. Marshall and NIU would kick the bejeezus out of Kansas without setting their beers down.

I wouldn't say they've gotten us jack shit. Beating KU got us into the playoffs, all of these wins have made a difference in recruiting.

I would agree with that statement. Beating an FBS team...ANY FBS team...is pretty damned good for recruiting....especially if it's one you compete with in recruiting kids.

Comparing apples to apples, since 1995 Montana is 5-4 vs unranked FBS teams. :coffee:

If you want a shorter time line Montana is 4-1 vs unranked FBS since 2000 and 4-3 vs all FBS opponents since 2000. :coffee:

This is the problem that happens over and over Bearit. Some NDSU fans think that what they've done is special when it is ordinary. Look at UNH as well in that category. They just don't know much about the history and what teams have done due to their myopic focus. All most of them know is what they say back & forth to each other at the bar.

I've been saying for years that TTBF is in the minority of NDSU fans that keep me having a glimmer of hope that there will be a discussion to be had with the fan base based in reality.

Good NDSU fans-TTBF style
Bad NDSU fans-JBB style.

For every one TTBF, there are four JBB's. That's cool though cuz they say funny things that keep you scratching your head while being entertained.

Thats the difference between a lot of FCS programs picking up their body bag games and The NDSU BISON. A lot of FCS teams expect to lose. NDSU expects to win and has the season riding on it a lot of the time. NDSU has a must win at Big 10 Minnesota this season.

I very much have enjoyed watching NDSU rise on the national stage. I've frankly been surprised it's gone so well. That said, I'm realistic... we're the new kid in town, making a name for ourselves... unfortunately our fans have introduced themselves as a contingent of drunken louts, filled with belligerent boasting. The kind of **** that when we were in D-II we could do. In D-II we were the top of the heap... in FCS we're good team - most years... but seeing as we've made the playoffs exactly once, and won zero conference titles (no, i don't count that short-bus GWFC for ****) we ought to be a bit more humble - enjoy our successes - acknowledge our lumps - and just enjoy where the hell we are and how far we've come in 10 short years.

Our fans have cheapened this for me somewhat. Making the NCAA Tournament in '09 was amazing... undermined by our fans blathering about actually beating Kansas and how we were "shoo-in sweet 16 team". Same thing happened with our playoff run - beating RMU was treated like we'd actually done something - so that when we beat Montana St in Bozeman, a legitimate achievement - it was cheapened. I really hope that if we someday manage to win a championship that our fans won't sully that too.
You're a cool guy, twin. I wish most Bison fans were like you. :thumb:

I'd say that's impressive also. I believe I stated "they haven't been against the greatest FBS teams and more than most FCS teams." I worded it "most FCS teams", because I realized there are other FCS schools that have beaten multiple FBS teams.

I guess I lost you on this one. When you mean hasn't gotten us jacksh**, what are you implying?

The Kansas win for example. It got us into the playoffs, extending our season and giving our young players an extra month of practice time. We had 6 or 7 true freshman playing last year, so any extra practice time is huge for them. It gave us a little air time on ESPN (not that anybody cares, but fun to watch) and it helped us land a couple new recruits from the KC metro (a new recruiting area for us). So, i'd say the Kansas win was beneficial.

Minnesota - its nice to beat the FBS in your backyard. The twin cities is the biggest recruiting area for us. So regardless of how good the gophers were that year, it gave us good press in minneapolis.

Probably the only "impressive" win would be the CMU game. They might not be a perennial power like NIU  , but they did win the MAC the year we beat them. Also, we won something like 44-14. Anytime you can blowout a FBS conference champ, i'd say its impressive (even though the MAC is the MAC). Most of the FBS wins that happen are close, not very many are blowouts in favor of the FCS team.

Fans of other schools might not think our overall success against FBS teams has done us jacksh**, but I think its been great for the program. Especially during our transition years when we weren't elgibile for the playoffs.

Iowa State was terrible that year. 50% of the FCS could have won that game.

I see we have the usual peanut gallery contributing their standard lines. About as relavent as this:

But wait!! MGBison comes up with a fantastic post! Explaining exactly what was meant by the NDSU Football achievements. He was able to look at the facts and draw a conclusion, just as I did, that the victory over BCS competitor and the Big 12 FBS conference Charter Member Kansas Jayhawks was a must win.

He also provided a nice summary of the BISON FBS wins. None of them fall into the moral victory column, as so many other schools like to claim. It is usually some statement like we would have won that one too if we hadnt missed that FG, or fumbled or had the INT. These are the tip-offs to the moral victory syndrome (MVS), a plague in this division as unworthy programs try to use them to stand shoulder to shoulder with the real champions.

Here is what I am talking about concerning the MVS. This is not the stuff champions are made of:

There are few other schools with bragging rights like NDSU has. I certainly dont mind if you talk about your own achievements. Have at it. After all NDSU is not the only high achieving team in this division, there are others, as well as the flash-in-the pans, EWU comes to mind. Montana also comes to mind, and UNI who has had the luxury of an easy go of it in the MVFC with SIU (caugh, caugh) being the big challenge also comes to mind.

 How often do you need to be reminded that you aren't in D2 anymore, JaBBer?

In FCS you can't refer to yourself as a high achieving team until you can play better than .500 in conference.

You don't deserve to be spoken of in the same conversation as UNI and SIU. UNI beats you like Pee Wee Herman's unit every time you play and SIU hasn't lost to those guys in years. :coffee:

Im not here to win a popularity contest with football fans from other schools, Especially someone that is quick to pull out the wallet and buy drinks for total strangers because of an irrational hate for NDSU (see record of NDSUvsMontans and most recent game results).

Im here to celebrate NDSUs success on the Grid-Iron. To champion the cause and put a light on the legend that is NDSU BISON FOOTBALL!
