Yeah I just saw that they confirmed it was the SEALS. That's even better, since most of those guys aren't under much cover. Maybe we'll actually get to hear from them at some point (which we wouldn't if it was Delta).

On April 29, Obama approved an operation to kill bin Laden. It was a mission that required surgical accuracy, even more precision than could be delivered by the government's sophisticated Predator drones. To execute it, Obama tapped a small contingent of the Navy's elite SEAL Team Six and put them under the command of CIA Director Leon Panetta, whose analysts monitored the compound from afar.

Panetta was directly in charge of the team, a U.S. official said, and his conference room was transformed into a command center.

Interesting side note. Obama's compound is only about 200 meters from the Pakistan Military Academy. In November of 2010, Gen. Petraeus visited the Pakistan Military Academy. His car must have driven right by bin Laden's compound. The intelligence community has had a pretty good idea where bin Laden was since August of 2010. Petraeus must have known what he was looking at when he drove by the bin Laden compound. I'm sure he had some CIA guys with him doing a little recon on that trip.

All this hoopla aside, I really hope that the administration has a plan for verifying the death to the American public. Seriously I hope they don't play this like the birth certificate thing. Within a week Expandspanos and the rest of the tinfoil hat brigades are going to be on here and elsewhere talking about how this was just a political ploy by an embattled president.

Let's see some pics, too. I really want to see the guy dead. (Something funny about that one pic that has been circulating)

Why is following a religion so important for our government, aka burial within a day. This guy was a disgrace to his own religion.

Btw, I did an image search for "Bin Laden dead" last night right after I heard the news and that same pic came up, dated 2009. I'm 99.9% sure it's fake.

EDIT: Did the search again today and the pic is everywhere. Who knows? Now I'm only 66.67% sure it's fake. :D

I'll have to go ahead and disagree with the decision of burial at sea, unless the CIA has put together a very convincing media piece showing the body being handled. People want tangible proof. Bringing the body to the US and establishing a ton of witnesses would have been the better move, IMHO. Fuck Islamic tradition.

As mentioned previously, I see the wackadoodle element of the right jumping all over this. Those people are so stupid and so numerous that they can convince themselves of anything.

Yeah it would have happened a long time ago if that rube in office Clinton had not one turned down the Sudanese offer to hand over Bin Laden and then later deny an airstrike on a compound Bin Laden was positively IDed by assets on the ground because Clinton was worried about a few civilian casualties. And you want to pin all the blame on Bush

FYI on the mugshot. Actual gunshot wound was to side of head, so earlier pic is likely fake:
(CNN) -- DNA matching is under way on samples from the body of slain terrorist leader Osama Bin Laden, a U.S. government official told CNN on Monday.

There are photographs of the body with a gunshot wound to the side of the head that shows an individual who is not unrecognizable as bin Laden, the official said.

No decision has yet been made on whether to release the photographs and if so, when and how...

He absolutely deserves a bump in the polls. Carter was criticized for a failed Iran hostage rescue attempt, Clinton was criticized because he supposedly could have have Bin Laden but let him get away; Obama gave the order for an operation in Pakistan and now Bin Laden is dead.

Give credit where it's due. If this mission had failed Obama and the U.S. would have been embarrased and there would be lots of people on here blasting Obama because of it.

Sometimes people should try being an American first and a Democrat or Republican second.
